Comments on: Olney: the Red Sox are “headed down that path” to trade Kevin Youkilis

For those of you with short memories, there was talk of trading Youkilis over the winter when they were looking for pitching. However, the hole they created at shortstop by trading everyone, and the unknowing who was going to fill that spot, along with being uncertain as to whether Iglesia or Middlebrooks would be ready to fill in for Youk led to them keeping him.

I love Youk, I have for many years, but I came to terms with the fact that he likely would be gone at the trade deadline back in February. It has nothing to do with throwing in the towel, and anyone who thinks the Sox are done haven’t taken a look at what they’ve done in the last week.

1) Trading Beckett as suggested and seconded above would be the surrender move, and a stupid one. He has no replacement ready and waiting in the minors or available by trade unless I’ve missed something.

2) Trading Youk now makes no sense. If he’s not healthy he has no trade value and we have the rookie. If he is healthy, he’s the better player.

From Pete Abraham’s blog: “Will Middlebrooks is 6 of his last 32 (.188) with 12 strikeouts and is down to .278. The scouting reports are starting to catch up with him a bit, as usually happens. He also made another mistake in the field, picking up a bunt that looked like it would roll foul.”.

I think the writing is on the wall for 2013. Will Middlebrooks will be our third baseman. But, putting aside all the legit contractual reasons it almost can’t happen, I’d sooner trade Gonzalez and put Youk back at first right now.

I am serious. I think they should hold him as long as they believe they’re still playoff contenders. Youk is like Berkman that way, injured frequently, but way too valuable to let go and is worth the risk.

it only takes one or two desperate teams to make a trade market for a guy. not to many guys playing 3rd base out there. i think they’d get a decent return.

As long as Middlebrooks keeps playing well, no one is going to see a trade of Youkilis as anything more than a trade being made to make room for a younger player. If Middlebrooks was hitting .204 and Youk had been hitting well before the injury, it would be a surrender trade. But just the opposite is true right now.
