I read some of Schilling’s “video” game blogging on his website a while back. When I heard him talking about the GOAT baseball games of the past, it became apparent that he wasn’t THAT knowledgable about video games. For instance, when talking about the greatest baseball video games of all time, he BARELY mentioned RBI Baseball or Bases Loaded, never mentioned Tommy LaSorda Baseball or Ken Griffey Jr. Baseball, and didn’t make mention of the MLB 2004 / 2005 franchise. My takeaways from his post was that he had played video games but on a much more casual level than someone that would proclaim themselves a “gamer”. His knowledge was very limited and he seemed more impressed by minute details (like player numbers being correct) than much more important stuff, like replay value and the overall multiplayer experience.

I would think that if someone is going to be successful at running a video game company, they have to live and breath video games. Schilling hardly lives and breathes video games…

Sadly, the GOP voter is too gullible to see how fooled they are every election (just cant quit you!!!)

If Romney wins, you will see an explosion in government hiring (unlike Obama) because that will actually lower the unemployment rate. Isnt that ironic, GOP blasts Obama for high unemployment, but every GOP President in past 30 years has used government jobs to keep unemployment low.

Every republican is RINO.

When a blowhard such as 38 fails this spectacularly both in business acumen and philosophical consistency, my inclination toward restraint is suspended.

The state of RI devoted the majority of an economic development fund to 38 Studios in an effort to lure the company from Massachusetts. Lil Rhody wanted the company in the worst way. Indeed. How many other public infrastructure projects could $75 mil have funded? If 38 Studios was that sound an investment, wouldn’t the private equity markets have been eager to provide seed money?

As for Schilling, his behavior follows a familiar pattern of “free market” conservatives- an effort to socialize the risks of a venture while keeping any profits private. Companies fail. Most start ups don’t survive. It happens. But Schilling has supported an ideology which has deified the private sector and demonized the ability of the public sector to do much of anything successfully. The lone exception he made to this dogma was when a public entity co-signed for a $75 million dollar loan for 38 Studios with tax dollars.

I’m guessing Schilling will play less of a prominent role in Sen. Brown’s 2012 campaign. (Note to Warren camp, there is some great video from ’09). I obviously have no sympathy for Schilling. Unfortunately for RI tax payers, this episode will cost them $75,000,000 more than it should have.

And I’m a Red Sox fan.

What they discoverd was that just like a Hollywood movie the biggest part of your budget isn’t the cast, actors or vfx: it us P&A, Publicity and Advertising.

Without at least a 20 million dollar marketing campaign you can’t launch a movie it a video game. I play the kinds of MMOs shilling was developing and I promise you that I only saw one banner ad for it on a gaming website.

You want to make money with that game you need to market your ass off in America, northern Europe, Australia, China, Korea and Japan. They didn’t invest the funds in P & A. It’s just that simple.
