From Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald comes word that the Marlins have placed outfielder Emilio Bonifacio on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to May 19, because of a sprained left thumb.

Chris Coghlan was recalled from Triple-A New Orleans in a corresponding 25-man roster move.

Bonifacio suffered the injury Friday night while trying to steal a base. An MRI taken Saturday ruled out structural damage, so he should be ready to return to the Fish soon after he’s eligible for activation.

The 27-year-old was batting .268/.351/.315 with a league-leading 20 stolen bases through 170 plate appearances this season.

Miami is 21-19, which ranks third in the National League East. Every team in that division is above .500.

This isn’t going to help a team struggling to produce runs. Bonny goes down, Gaby Sanchez is beginning to look like a lost cause at the plate and got sent back to AAA for the first time since 2009, John “SHICYHI” Buck looks ever more hopeless at the plate and with that swing of his might be better off hiring himself out as a wind turbine, Tweeter’s knee remains gimpy – not that he was any good with RISP anyway – and the Hanster, though prone to outbursts of offensive prowess sufficiently long to raise all sorts of false expectations, seems doomed to the mid-200s again this season.

The Feesh are living and dying by the arm, and that’s not going to be good enough in this division. OUTRAGEOUS RECOMMENDATION OF THE FIRST QUARTER OF THE SEASON: I really think it might already be time to think about blowing this team up.
