I believe his slump is due to his sickness “valley fever” and the Mets, as usual, aren’t telling the whole truth. Ike is only still with the major league team because of his defense. He can pretty much make any other infielder a gold glove player.

To this point in the season, his ground ball rate is 50%, compared to 42% last season and 43% the year before.

To make matters worse, his infield fly ball rate is 13.3% (compared to 7.6% and 7.3% in the last 2 seasons).

His K rate this season is 26.9% (up from 23% and 20.8%).

And his BB rate is 6.9% (down from 12% and 11.4%)

He’s not walking well, he’s striking out more, he’s hitting more ground balls, and when he does hit the ball in the air, it’s often an infield pop-up. I like Davis, but at this point, it’s not simply a matter of bad luck at the plate, and balls finding gloves. He’s not seeing the ball the way he did in his first season and a half, and he’s not making the same kind of contact. Hopefully for him, he’ll be able to figure it out.

Had he instead played the way he has for the first 36 games of this season, he might never have gotten the chance he has this year. Is Davis really the player from last season, or this one? Probably somewhere in between. But it’s odd how much of the fan base and even a lot of the media act like he’s a seasoned veteran of some sort. The guy played fewer than 200 games in the bigs before this year, and is coming off of a major injury to boot. It’s reasonable to think he might need a little time in the minors to work things out, and it’s nothing to be terrified about. A trip to the minors here doesn’t mean his career is over.
