No Big Deal. He should have his license suspended, cars impounded for awhile, etc. He should be forced to hire a driver. But jail time when DUI offenders get out after 10 DUIs would be wrong.

How about a little math for the sabremetricians…
93 mph = 136 feet per second. The reaction time for the average driver (from perceiving a hazard to reacting) is about 1.5 seconds. For a trained athlete, let’s say he’s quicker to the brake, at about 1.25 seconds. That means that if a deer jumps into the highway ahead, by the time Chapman perceives the threat and reacts, he has already travelled about 170 feet. That doesn’t include the distance travelled after his foot hits the brake; at 93 mph, that’s about another 413 feet. So at 93 mph, on a dry road, his car will have travelled 583 feet before coming to a full stop. That’s assuming there is no impact, which would obviously shorten the distance. This is very simplified and doesn’t account for alot of factors: road condition, vehicle & tire conditions, driver’s skill & fatigue, etc.

Actually, driving that Mercedes 93 on the highway is probably far safer (assuming equal and sufficient driver skill) than driving a minivan 70 on the same highway.

Surface and vehicle are important in determining risk.

Its actually interesting, I worked in KY but lived in Ohio and the tax rates in KY were actually higher than ohio. I don’t know the exact number sadly but its not much of a difference in either direction.

Driving an old, beat-up Bronco II on a windy, bumpy country road that’s riddled with frost heaves at 93 is dangerous. Driving a car that’s engineered for high speeds and that is probably equipped with some very nice tires on an interstate at 93 is probably little more dangerous than driving a minivan, or your average family jalopy at 75-80, which is a prefetch standard speed on most interstates. Not. A. Big. Deal.

Youve never rode with the flow of traffic on your local interstate highway if you have youre easily doing 75 – 85 MPH depending on the speed limit. anyone who says they dont is a liar and a hypocrite. So for you to sit here and act like its the most horrible thing ever done is a joke.

30MPH over the speed limit is endangering the lives of others. Even if traffic is light that early in the morning. I certainly don’t drive exactly the speed limit, but 30MPH is reckless, and I’m willing to bet the local prosecutor agrees with me. I think YOU need to get off your high horse.

The speed limit varies in the tri-state area, so I don’t know exactly how much he was speeding, but in Indiana the speed limit on most interstates is 70. I frequently drive from Indy to Cincinnati on I-74, and the speed limit drops to 65 when you cross the border. So, he may have been driving nearly 30 MPH over the speed limit on a suspended license. The Reds may just slap him on the wrist, but Ohio might do much more. I’m definitely interested why his license was suspended in the first place.

Was it a bad idea? Probably. But at least he did it on an interstate, and not trying to weave through traffic on an urban highway where more traffic and lower speeds are likely. The speed limit is typically 70-75 o an interstate, but the design speed (speed at which the road can safely be traveled) is higher, probably at least 90. Couple that with a high performance car, the speed itself wasn’t inherently dangerous. Now, if there was even moderately heavy traffic present, it’s obviously a different story.

But hey, maybe he’ll be unavailable against the Braves tonight.

Many Cubans arrive here that way, usually in worn-down tires. Ever heard of wet foot, dry foot? If they make it to the beach, they are paroled into the country and granted suspended licenses because the tires they floated in on are showing thread.

Chapman can only drive at top speeds when he hasn’t driven the day before. If he drives on back to back days he looses several MPH and is all over the road.

First, 93 mph at 12:42 am on a Monday on an Ohio interstate is not that obscenely or dangerously fast. There are plenty of interstates between the mountain ranges of this country on which all traffic moves about 85 mph (the speed limits being 75 mph).

Second, in that context, it is likely that no one’s life (besides his own, perhaps) was in any more danger than if he was going a more typical speed of 70ish on such a road.

Did you hear that up on your high horse or do I need to say it louder?
