He is close to both Nolan Ryan and pitching coach Maddox. The Rangers would also benefit having an experienced pitcher on the staff to help Rangers core of young pitchers like Holland, Harrison & Darvich.

He isn’t much of an upgrade over the performances they’ve been getting. He’d most likely replace Lynn…even with Wainwright struggling, they’ll leave him out there for a while to see if he can work things out.

The pitching hasn’t been that bad lately, the defense has been horrible…and when you have a lot of mid-K rate guys, you just can’t keep giving team 4 or 5 outs/inning and expect things to be okay.

He’d sign with the rangers well before he’d sign with the Phillies. Remember that the report you may be talking about from csnphilly.com also mentioned that the Phillies weren’t very happy with his dedication (don’t know a better word to paraphrase it) to the team last year. Also, some members of the team wren’t happy with his extremely quick exit from the team after last years season ending playoff loss. I guess that added to the perception that he just wasn’t really into being there. Overall I think he’s a decent #4 on a real world series contender.
