My best friend has a massive clot in one of his calves…it was discovered after his entire leg swelled up to an unnatural size, and he needed to be hospitalized for a few days in high school.

Doctors don’t want to operate for fear of a piece of it breaking off and causing a stroke or an embolism, so he needs to be on Coumadin (blood thinning meds) for the rest of his life, which carries all sorts of risks in itself and has meant an end to a lot of activities he used to enjoy, like skiing.

It’s a really scary thing…I wish Rivera all the best.

If it’s the latter, it’s frightening that a professional athlete that obviously keeps himself in peak physical shape like Rivera could have had a serious blood clot.

It just goes to show that living a healthy lifestyle can only get one so far…genetic predispositions to certain conditions are the great leveler. It’s scary.
