Lance Berkman to undergo knee surgery tomorrow

UPDATE: Berkman’s surgery is set for tomorrow morning, says Strauss.

==========

Lance Berkman told Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post Dispatch that he’ll undergo knee surgery either tomorrow or Friday, but rather than have the operation in Colorado as expected he’ll instead go under the knife in Houston.

Berkman still lives in Houston after spending a dozen years with the Astros and explained: “I just thought it made sense to have everything happen here if possible.”

Berkman and the Cardinals have disagreed about the extent of the damage to his ACL, so there won’t be an official recovery timetable until the surgeon gets a closer look. At the very least he has a torn meniscus and ACL stretching, and the best-case scenario would likely involve a return in 6-8 weeks.

Bummer brah. Berkman is awesome. I hope he can play again…and at the usual high level.

I hear you Bravo. I want to see him come back (and retire) on his own terms.
From a team standpoint (which really is secondary)…all that depth has suddenly disappeared.

Given that hot-hitting Craig is hurt too, yeah, depth is suddenly gone…

        And Matt Carpenter now too

Any word on Craig by the way? Is he coming back on schedule?

      • El Bravo - May 23, 2012 at 4:00 PM

No word from what I’ve seen, which means to me, that he’s probably not ready to play after his DL stint runs out.

Craig is scheduled to come off June 1st I believe

My prediction: He’ll hit the game winning homer in Game 6 of the World Series this year and retire into the sunset.

      I will take it Sir!

      Lance! Lance! Come back Lance!

this would be a 2-3 week recovery on the chipper jones scale

    • El Bravo - May 23, 2012 at 4:00 PM

One hour on the Pujols scale.

Too bad about berkman, he’s been playing well the past few years

A healthy Berkman for the stretch run would be some great insurance. Too bad he won’t be around for inter league away games. With all the Red Bird depth, and emerging young corner infielders and outfielders, he most likely will be playing somewhere else in 2013 ,(as a DH in Houston?) but it sure would be a welcome sight to have him return in the dog days of August to give the kids some welcome relief and bring his veteran leadership for another World Series run. He would fit in nicely as a DH in the American League park.

Here is to hoping he responds well to surgery, treatment, and the Docs discover the main issue is his meniscus.

And as always, I still like Lance a Lot.
