MLB named “sports league of the year”

May 24, 2012, 3:30 PM EDT

Sally Field You Really Like Me

I’m picturing a black tie gala, everyone who matters in attendance. When the nominees are read, a four-way split screen comes up with Bud Selig, Roger Goodell, David Stern and Gary Bettman, all looking hopeful.  As soon as the winner is announced, the losing three all purse their lips and try to act like they ain’t mad:

Major League Baseball was named Sports League of the Year at the 2012 Sports Business Awards presented by SportsBusiness Journal and SportsBusiness Daily last night in New York.  The award recognizes the success baseball enjoyed in 2011 coupling unparalleled drama on the field with record business performance and innovative fan engagement. Baseball Commissioner Allan H. (Bud) Selig accepted the award on behalf of the league.

Of course, everyone goes to these things for the after party. I heard Elton John’s was, as usual, off the hook.

Is it just me, or does this entire blog post just stink of an excuse to post that picture?

    • Craig Calcaterra - May 24, 2012 at 3:44 PM

I do not have to sit here and listen to these wild accusations.

      But maybe.

Some days I wonder if Craig Calcaterra and Carson Cistulli are the same person. There are a lot of Cs in there…

The whole post could have been just that picture, and I wouldn’t complain.

So soccer doesn’t get put up on the split screen? They are getting TV deals signed, record revenues, and more relevant referees in the game, which I think deserves some recognition.

      USA! USA! USA!

      • kopy - May 24, 2012 at 4:41 PM

Well, USA did host the most financially successful World Cup of all time, until the latest in 2010 edged it out.

I’m assuming it’s an award for United States sports league of the year. If it was best sports league in the world, FIFA would win every year, no matter how corrupt it is.

MLS has made tremendous strides, but I would only expect it to compete for (and actually probably win) the “most improved” sports league.

If it was a worldwide award, FIFA’s corruption would ensure that it won every year :-)

Agreed that MLS has come a long way, and that it is not yet one of the major leagues yet.

Soccer sucks and is more boring then watching grass grow. The growth of soccer only proves the wussification of the country.

    Yep, Bud Selig…ruining baseball again.

Speaks to the power of baseball that even Selig and the current group of owners can’t screw it up.

Great post and and even better picture. Sometime Craig hits home runs, sometimes he strikes out, sometimes it rains.

Gary Bettman’s just happy they thought to invite him.

If Canadians had the vote, Betteman would be at the bottom of the list. He has little support in Canada.

  6. foreverchipper10 - May 24, 2012 at 5:13 PM

Did they get the award out of pity since MLB is a dying sport?

    • chuckihendrix9 - May 24, 2012 at 5:36 PM

still mad because the Braves choked ?

      • foreverchipper10 - May 24, 2012 at 5:55 PM

Not in the least. It sucked sure but that is the life of a fan. I was making a joke because of all the articles written saying baseball is dying. Apparently the humor was lost on this one. :(

whats that from bruno? bull durham?

All they had to do was beat out Hockey. And Hockey has had a great season, but Canada is really the only place that truly cares about Hockey. NFL had a lock out and multiple concussion issues resulting in law suits. The NBA has been losing money and had a lock out themselves. Before you go patting Bud on the back and telling him he is awesome, try and think about that. I love Baseball but they really couldn’t lose it this year could they?

    • proudlycanadian - May 24, 2012 at 8:48 PM

We care about hockey, but most of us have little respect for Betteman.

David Freese should have accepted the award

That girl needs to work on her tan a bit more…

    • nolanwiffle - May 25, 2012 at 9:13 AM

That is not “That Girl”…….that’s “The Flying Nun”.
