What do you call a strike 3 call on a ball that’s 8″ off the plate?

I’m assuming this is in response to Miller’s ringing him up in the Rays game. Might want to check the tape again, as strike 3 was no where near 8″ off the plate. It was borderline high, and too close to be taking on a 3-2 count. Now, if you meant strike 2 was 8″ off the plate, you’d be closer, although still probably exaggerating. Regardless, it doesn’t give Lawrie carte blanche to act like a child, especially sprinting down the first base line like he did.

That’s a great idea. Players should also take out full-page color ads showing every time they struck out, made an error, got drunk in a bar, and stiffed a waitress on a tip.

this whole “shown up” thing is plain stupid. What do you call a strike 3 call on a ball that’s 8″ off the plate? The entire world sees it. I guess the batter just needs to take it like a man and go ride the bench….If only MLB had an effective way of dealing with the lets call “poor performance” of umps.

With the amount of money that ML’ers make, I’d take out a full page ad the next day in the paper of whatever city that particular umpire is in and clearly show with photographic evidence exactly how screwed up these umpires are. Incompentent and unqualified umpiring has been allowed to go on for much too long in baseball. The last 20 years have been an absolute joke, starting with Joe West and including Mssrs Davidson, Hernandez, Bucknor, and Davis. For every good umpire, like a Jim Joyce there are 2 misfits like West and Bucknor.

While Lawrie might consider himself privileged baseball royalty, I think “reign” is not the word you want, CC. “Rein” is more likely.
