You get a bunch of thumbs up for laughing out loud. That makes me laugh out loud a little. Is that a lil lol? Or do I just write it in lower-case to show a smaller laugh versus a bigger capital LOL? I know the usage of “a” versus “an” but I’m not so good with new-age acronyms.

I’ve been having the “an historical” and “an historic” argument since I was born. The H is hard, mean you use “a” not “an.”

I can’t tell if that was a serious question, but I’ll assume it was.

Historian begins with hard H sound, not a vowel sound, thus use “a”.

Hour begins with soft H sound, begins with ahhh, a vowel sound, thus use “an”.

It’s “a hilarious.” Sorry, but that drives me nuts and my grammar policing comes out. The rule goes, if the word in question begins with a vowel sound phonetically, then use “an.” The precedent is not set by what word actually begins with, vowel or otherwise. When an acronym, you it is right either way in certain cases.

“I was involved in a RTA” is correct b/c you can read that as “Road Traffic Accident.”

“I was involved in an RTA” is correct b/c you can read it as just the acronym, which begins with “ar” sound, thus “an” is used.

Okay, I’ll take my douchey grammar police hat off now, but when folks say “an historical” it drives me nuts, b/c they’re trying to be right, when they could not be more wrong. That said, “an hour” from now works, b/c it’s got the vowel sound, not a hard “h” sound.
