Brett was a great player. Jeter is a great player. They are simply differnt sorts of players. Jeter is not a power hitter.

Jeter does not bat third or fourth.

They will share space in the Hall of Fame.

One does not have to tear down one to support the other.

Get over it.

In comparing Brett’s stats to Jeter’s, it’s clear Brett has better high water marks in just about every category: BA: .390, HR: 30, OBP: .454, SLG: .664, OPS: 1.118. In ’79 Brett had 20 triples; the most Jeter ever hit was 9, and he has above average speed. All in all Jeter looks like the Richie Cunningham of .300 hitters; humdrum.

I don’t think anyone who has watched both of them play would say that Jeter is a better hitter than Brett was. Jeter is a HOFer because of his numbers, but you’ll never have stories to tell about him like Brett flirting with .400 or the pine tar incident. He’s slightly more interesting than Cal Ripken Jr.

18 games over a career absolutely can be discounted. Especially considering they weren’t giving him playtime afterward so there’s not even a guarantee he would have been up for that time.

i dont get your point. Even if he missed 300 games, Jeter still has more hits in less at bats and less games played as Brett. I think when its all said and done, even if you give brett those extra 300 games, since jeter is still going strong and jeter has already surpassed him in fewer at bats and games, he’ll still have more hits.

and “don’t forget” that SS is the toughest position along with CF, so it’s a lot more taxing.

Actually, I respect Jeter as a player. He’s definite Hall of Famer.

I’m just tired of the “Jeter farted, doesn’t it smell so sweet” attitude that most writers have.

He’s not the best player in the game, and he’s not the best shortstop. But for some reason, he gets more press than any other player.

Oh yeah, he’s a Yankee. That explains it all. The Yankees get headlines just becasue they’re Yankees, not because they do anything special.

Brett had a small window of time with great talent in the late 70′s and early 80′s. Jeter had great talent around him for a much longer duration–the latter half of the 90′s and most of the first decade of the 21st century.

Check your facts Deadeddesign.
Jeter made is debut on May 29,1995. The MLB players strike took 18 games off the 1995 regular season. The 1995 season began on April 25,1995. Maybe the aYankees call up Jeter earlier if those games were not missed? We will never really know. That said obviously 18 games is not a huge amount of MLB service time but it cannot merely be discounted.

What moron is suggesting Jeter played in a strike shortened season? The strike was 94, he had a cup of coffee in 95 and his rookie year was 96. He also has 100 fewer home runs and is 20 behind in WAR. Jeter is great but Brett is better…at the least you’re not a moron for thinking Brett’s better.

jeter has always had a all star cast around him. everyone played good and hard on the yankees in the 90′s-00′s. brett didnt have much of a supporting cast he was the beast of his team. both players are amazing played different positions and had different hitting styles. i think the competition during brett’s time was better. i prefer brett because he did just as much with less to aid him. plus brett has ALOT more intentional walks than jeter has ever gotten.

The story says Jeter’s lifetime average is 8 points better than Brett’s. Who are these morons suggesting Brett is better than Jeter? The 3 extra seasons Brett has on Jeter more than makes up for the games he missed. Jeter played in a strike shortened season also. Jeter has played just as hard or harder than Brett. Jeter is just a far superior athlete, therefore he makes it look easier.
