In my haste to scribble something this AM, forgot to congratulate Jhonaton Solano on his first MLB hit. A solid opposite-field double off Heath Bell.

Also forgot to mention that Heath's fastball was, per the MASN radar gun, a couple of ticks faster Tuesday than it was Monday. It's possible that the radar gun gained an MPH. More likely, Heath is getting back into form.

I agree about Willingham's potential for this year. I don't know how much stake I put into "protection" for a hitter, but I think the potential to be sandwiched between Mauer and Morneau (both lefy, and hitting well now) means more managers will have leftys throwing to Willingham than they'd otherwise like. Of course, Fuentes is a PROVEN CLOSER, and he has to pitch in the 9th no matter who is hitting, right? RIGHT?!

Also agree about Cole DeVries. Wild on control last night, but hitless for an extended period of time. As an undrafted free agent who sat in the Twins' farm forever (and wasn't exceptionally good there), he shouldn't really be holding any lineup down.

My girlfriend will vouch for the fact that I called Willingham's home run last night, based entirely on how poorly Fuentes was throwing. Not that Balfour was any better the inning before, he had the good fortune to face the less productive part of the Twins line-up and thus escaped harm.

But we (A's fans) watched Willingham all last year as he blasted 29 HR's in the Mausoleum and on the road, and watching him swing his first 3 times at bat he looked dangerous. With 9 HR's he's approximately on pace for 29 again, and since Target Field looks like it plays similarly to the Mausoleum in terms of power, 29 or that neighborhood looks achievable for him.

Parker was who he is for 6 innings, too many walks, too many 3-2 counts, but ultimately too much stuff for the Twins. What was shocking was Cole DeVries, who never touched 90 on the gun but kept the punchless A's off balance all night. Two nights of this in a row had the A's announcers dreaming of a lineup with Cespedes and Manny. It looks like the Great and Powerful Beane has decided that the loser in the Manny-world incarnation will be Cowgill, no surprise-a .240 SLG is bad even by A's anemic standards. What's shocking is that Crisp will still see regular playing time, not the Smith/Gomes platoon. The outfield is expected to be Cespedes in left, Crisp in center, and Reddick in right. So average in all fields with plus arms in the corners. But a real penalty offensively in center, though Crisp had a very good game last night. But a 179/229/194 line doesn't lie. Neither does his declining UZR150. Most of us would prefer the platoon in left, Cespedes in center, and Reddick in right, with Crisp used as a 4th OF/defensive replacement/pinch-runner.

Amazing that a team purportedly rebuilding still pays so much homage to declining veterans like Crisp and Fuentes.

Yep, smart baseball all the way around by the Beaver Men. Tonight they go for the sweep. This is who they are, I think. Steady, if unspectacular pitching (although Romero was great thru 5.5) with a monster offence to see them thru the late innings. They need Bautista to shorten his swing a bit, copy E5 in fact, and then he'll start hitting all over the place. What I've been amazed by is Jeff Mathis's hitting. That guy was supposed to have no bat. In fact it seems that LA of Anahiem is where good hitting goes to die. Mathis is not bad. Not bad at all. Strong as an ox, too. He flip his bat at a ball and it'll go to the wall. Nice to have that kind of easy power.

Giants middle of the order: melky 3-4, posey 2-4 w/2rbi, (first runs scored off Brian Shaw when pitching on the road in 10 games) Pagan 2-4. Pagan plays with an angry face, i have not seen one of those at the yard since Will the Thrill Clark glowered his way around Candlestick.
Never mind the nay-sayers, PC. I saw the catch. Lawrie was like lightening. He broke right away; he was like the The Flash, he was so quick. The slide on his back under the ball was to give himself more time (as it was hooking a bit away form him). In the end he made the catch look really easy, he got there so fast. The mid-slide, spin-around, back-to-his-feet-in-one motion was just the effortless gravy on top. Robinson v Lawrie? Yeah, I'll take Lawrie in that one.

I hope Anibal keeps this up, because it will be fun to see him take the Feesh to the cleaners when he's ready for arbitration, especially after the way they jerked him around in the offseason. Last night was a teepical Anibal game - well peetched, with about as little run support as the team could provide, which in this case was barely enough.

The Hanster found his home run stroke again after a week or two - can't recall when he parked his last one - for a nice little late game insurance run.

But the best news for the Feesh, I think, was that the Iron Giant when two for three including a two out ribby double in the sixth and hiked his average to .298 in his quest to round into the Complete Slugger. In a local interview yesterday the Giant noted that he'd always hit for average in the minors and didn't want to be one of those all or nothing guys who go one for four with a dinger all the time. He's being more patient, and he's also taking greater advantage of his speed for a big guy. Under the radar, he's stealing more bases when he's walked, which is something opposing peetchers will need to take into consideration in close games. And of course, also going somewhat unnoticed because of the focus on his power, he's been making terrific plays in the outfield and he has a rail gun for a throwing arm,

In the pantheon of Nats-killers, Anibal Sanchez ranks right up there with Roy Halladay, Cole Hamels and Tim Hudson. Edwin Jackson also pitched well but made the critical mistake, a wild pickoff throw. Did I mention that I've seen better fish tanks than the ones at the Baseball Palace in seafood restaurants?

Wait a minute. Melky broke a record held by Willie Mays? Melky is saving the Giants' season? Are we talking about the same Melky?

If the Red Sox can get to Verlander, it's a very positive sign indeed.

And I'm glad to see Pujols and the Angels turning things around. The AL West is an interesting division and it'll be that much more interesting with a competitive Angels team and a Pujols playing to his full potential.

No umpires were harmed in the Jays game; however, that young hot headed catcher for the Orioles got tossed for arguing balls and strikes. The argument got heated and for a moment, I wondered if he was going to get violent. Fortunately, his manager got between him and the ump.

Lawrie also made the defensive play of the game in the 9th inning when he caught a foul ball that Brooks Robinson would not have reached.

Not just a good day for Todd Frazier, been a pretty eventful week for the guy.....
5/23-first big league walk-off HR
5/27-hit HR without the bat actually in his hands
5/29-saves a guy choking on a steak then goes and gets 2 steaks of his own vs. the Buccos

Put that one in the time capsule, gonna be tough to top.
