If it was a national broadcast, then sure, whatever.

If it was a local broadcast, chill out about “homerism”. It’s what we “homers” pay for.

Otherwise, they’re exactly the same–terrible. Aside from the fact that one’s dead and all.

The only difference between the two is that Santo criticized his team when they weren’t doing well. He never really said anything that showed he blamed bad calls or the umps for the Cubs being on the losing end. (Sure, he could’ve, given all the bad years of Cubs baseball he endured, but he knew the difference between performing and the REALITY of bad calls.)

As for Harrelson? He’s a homer in the strictest sense. He not only likes to blame the umps, but he’ll go completely silent when the Sox are being beat. And that just shows that it’s not just emotion he’s displaying but favoritism towards the Sox. He should man up and criticize his team more often and NOT get so upset when calls don’t go their way Bad calls are part of the game. Sometimes they go for you, sometimes they go against you. It’s funny that I’ve never heard Harrelson comment repeatedly about how the White Sox got a break on a bad call, while hearing countless Cubs announcers recapitulate on the luck the Cubs received when a call worked out for them.

As for having to watch White Sox games and listen to Harrelson, I always remember one simple mantra:

“And you can watch the game on muuuuuuuuuuuuute, YES!”

On a sad note, I do think Hawk is going to die of a heart attack in the booth after the blown call of all blown calls. Can you imagine if Jim Joyce’s blown perfect game call happened to one of the White Sox? I can’t even begin to imagine the unbelievable amount of rage.

…wait, Hawk “epitomizes the mentality of a huge chunk of us Southsiders”??? So half a city is screaming bats#!t crazy!?!? How has the South Side not imploded? How does Chicago continue to exist? That’s the true miracle here, not the AL Central standings.

Because your choices are apparently either
(a) A vapid gimmicky moron who is such a homer that he will actively refuse too call parts of the game because he’s too busy sulking that his team is losing
or
(b) Some sort of hypothetical announcing robot who presumably sounds like the thing from Lost in Space

Which is a nonsense false choice; it is entirely possible to root for the team your currently announcing for and not allow that rooting to override your ability to talk about subjects rationally or at the very least actually call the games you’re being paid too call.

If any Harrelson fans are curious about how such a remarkable announcing style would work, just watch any single announcer doing any single game for any single league ever because every one of them is better than Harrelson. What a joke.

Sure, Hawk doesn’t give us good insight on the finer things in baseball. But I’ll easily exchange that for the true, genuine love he has for the White Sox, because I share the same mentality.

That said, everyone who is employed has something to be accountable for, and Harrelson is terrible at his job. I suppose people are used to what they’re used to, and White Sox fans are used to Harrelson, but you learn nothing from listening to him announce a game, he pouts when things aren’t going well, oftentimes remaining silent for minutes at a time, his homerism goes beyond cheering for the team to being completely blinded to what is going on, and he throws fits like this afternoon’s.

I live in Chicago, and as an Indians fan I’m more drawn to the American League, so I watch a lot of Sox games, but I almost always have to mute them after an inning or so, because I simply cannot enjoy the game if I’m having to listen to Harrelson.
