The Spelling Bee needs to get out of its mother’s basement

May 30, 2012, 4:30 PM EDT

Great moments in nerd convergence:

Actually, that’s not fair. Spelling Bee people aren’t really major nerds. Not compared to baseball statheads anyway.  Baseball statheads can’t really call anyone nerds other than furries, really. Maybe a couple others. It’s mostly explained here.

    Hooray for Emma!

“Actually, that’s not fair. Spelling Bee people aren’t really major nerds.”

No, no we aren’t. (Spoken by a former National Spelling Bee participant, who did NOT make it far enough to get on the ESPN coverage.)

…Actually, is it wrong of me to say with a last name like Ciereszynski, of COURSE she’s a good speller? ;p

I was just about to make that same comment about her name. That’s an impressive one :)

Also… when did sabermetrics become enough of a mainstream “thing” to make it into the spelling bee?

(channeling Professor Frink) “I AM a major nerd, and I’ll prove it by running a correlation of the degree of difficulty in a contestant’s name and their finish in the bee!”

“im not a nerd bart, nerds are smart”

  5. Max Power - May 30, 2012 at 5:19 PM

I believe this is the only sports blog post today with a gratuitous mention of furries. At least I hope so.

  6. Ben - May 30, 2012 at 5:32 PM

Crap, I’m over 6, like Pokemon, and sabermetrics. I guess I’ll be informing my girlfriend tonight that she needs to break up with me. :(

But only after you ask her to dress up like Snorlax for you one…last…time?

      • Ben - May 30, 2012 at 6:07 PM

How did you know?? Who told you I like that?

      • snowbirdgothic - May 30, 2012 at 6:22 PM

I’ve got friends at WotC. They…tell me things.

      • Ben - May 30, 2012 at 10:11 PM

It makes me mad sad, because she was 6-7 GAR (girlfriend above replacement)

  7. bbk1000 - May 30, 2012 at 6:29 PM

Again, it was easy by the headline to know who was behind this…the link, sad as it is, ices it.

Craig the SME, who would have thunk it….

Is this the event where the most socially awkward kids you’ve ever seen pick their nose on live tv?

I haven’t seen the Geek Hierarchy in ages. My wife used to go to that site all the time.
