Have you ever tried to keep track of the number of foul balls, home runs, scuffed up hits, bounced balls, etc in a game? There must be over 100 balls used in each major league game, and if the umpire insists on tossing each of these to the pitcher, it CAN mess with the catcher.

Me….. I umpire a kids league where we use a ball until it’s too dirty to see, but when we have foul balls I almost always give the replacement ball to the catcher. Why? Because my arm sucks, and I would rather not draw attention to myself by making a bad throw. But that’s just me, a guy working a kids league, not a Major League Umpire with an ego to match…….

Umpires are getting out of control in my opinion—I think Bud needs to put his foot down and start suspending these guys if they can’t get their act together. The game is not about umpires.

What cracks me up about this story is that Martin is complaining that Diaz not letting him throw the ball back hinders his ability to keep his arm loose during the game. How many throws back to the pitcher does he need? Ball one, throw the ball back. Called strike, throw the ball back. Swing and a miss, throw the ball back. Diaz not letting him throw the ball back after foul balls or balls taken out of play isn’t a big deal. Diaz’s attitude is about why he wouldn’t let him throw balls back is a big deal, however.

If they don’t reprimand umps for all of the bad calls (their jobs), why would they reprimand them for just being a pompous ass?
