“He’s as good as gone” is not obvious, nor is “He’s still got a lot left”. These are both opinions that are very much open to debate. Which is exactly what the comments are for.

That was my first reaction. Also, their bench is rather thin right now, and are they really so sold on Middlebrooks? He has had a great debut, but his stats in the minors weren’t that impressive.

However, this is the last guaranteed year of Youkilis’s contract, so if they do want to trade him, they don’t have a lot of time to wait for his value to go up (assuming they wouldn’t want to pick up his $13 million option for next year).

If I was a Red Sox fan, I would want them to hold on to him a bit longer to improve his trade value. Right now it is on the low end.
