Barry Zito is selling his house for $11.5 million

Sometimes it’s easy to lose track of the money professional athletes make because their contracts are usually viewed within the context of team payrolls and free agency and everything else that also includes ridiculous amounts of money.

But then one of them puts his house on the market and my brain finally realizes, “wow, this guy has an insane amount of money.”

Barry Zito is the latest example, as the San Jose Mercury News reports that the Giants left-hander is selling his home in California for $11.5 million. And why wouldn’t a 34-year-old with more than $100 million in lifetime earnings have an $11.5 million home?

Zito apparently bought the 7,100-square foot home five years ago for $8.9 million, but now wants to move closer to his office (which is also known as the Giants’ ballpark) for a shorter commute. He’s making $19 million this season and will get $20 million next season, plus $18 million or a $7 million buyout in 2014.

Shouldn’t the headline read “trying to sell his house”.

Why is this even a story? And has anyone forgotten how much Zito makes? No! Because, we are reminded of it at the beginning of every season when someone writes a story about why he can’t be traded. For that matter has anyone forgotten how much professional athletes make? In other news water is wet. Slow news day? Sometimes no news is better than filler pieces that are just flat out silly.

no one peed in my wheaties. but it is a non-story. you want to be treated like a real journalist like all bloggers say then post real stories is all I am saying. And no one has lost track of how much the Giants overpaid for Zito, because there is a non-story on it every year.

Again, with the clicking, and the reading, and the signing in and the replying, when the title would’ve told you quite clearly what the story was about. With the title “Barry Zito is selling his house for $11.5 million,” what did you think was going to be the subject of the story?

    I think he’ll be receiving a $7 million buyout in 2014.

How Sabean still has his job after the Zito and Rowand contracts aside from the Giants never having any type of farm system until of recent is beyond me
