Craig… Your blind hatred of all things Philles has you arguing semantics with Charlie. Charlie uses the word “swagger” you use “quality”. Saying the team has no swagger is just the PC way of saying we have no quality. Charlie still has to manage this team. It would be alot harder if he came up and said Ty Wigginton is no Ryan Howard or Juan Pierre can’t hit like Chase Utley.

but that is changing. After a horrible start, Rollins is hitting .282 in the last 30 days. IIRC his average was way down around .230 in early May.

I’ve been following a blog recently that posts about each game and Charlie’s performance as manager. Know that the bloggers are stats driven so they don’t believe in bunting the runner from 1st to 2nd, only situational from 2nd to 3rd, don’t believe in the hit-and-run, The intentional walk is a sin, and don’t believe in closers only the leverage index should dictate when you bring in your best reliever (Win Probability is big here).

Of course the numerous gripes against Charlie there can also be laid against every single MLB manager (bringing in your closer before the 9th? OMG the universe would collapse in on itself if that happened, fortunately the Fringe Division is there to prevent closers from pitching before the 9th).

I think one specific habit that Charlie has that is especially disturbing is to put too much stock into player-vs-player matchups (career at bats). Aside from the small sample size he’ll go on about how Thome is lifetime 5 for 11 against So-and-so and forget the fact the Thome has those 5 hits like 6 years ago and hasn’t hit him since.

Fear is the problem and you cited all the reasons no one fears them. They only have a couple hitters you even have to worry about. You don’t have to pitch around anyone. They’re 29th in walks. This is what Manuel means when he says “they go right at us.”

Their main proprietor of ‘swagger’ (Rollins) is currently hitting .251/.301/.346. I don’t see that changing any time soon to be honest. Meek it out and hope for the playoffs, hope someone gets hot just like the Giants a few years ago.

we clearly have the pitchers to be elite (halladay needs to come back healthy). but until we start having those lopsided innings, 5 6 7 runs in an inning. we will not be feared. phils never have been great at small ball

You can blame Charlie, at least a little bit. He had Qualls on the mound, bases loaded, no outs, down by only 1 run. And no one warming up in the bull pen.

Opposing managers don’t fear Charlie either. He’s a great guy, but he’s not gonna win you any Chess matches. LaRussa took him to school in the playoffs last year. LaRussa pushed all the right buttons, while Charlie didn’t even push any buttons. Just sat there chewing gum in the dugout. Charlie is a “sit back and wait for the 3-run homer” kind of manager, but with this roster, that’s not going to happen very often. When the margin for error is so slim, and every run is at a premium, Charlie is not the guy you want at the helm. He’s supposed to be a hitting guru as well, but this team’s hitting approach is brutal. They constantly get themselves out by swinging at bad pitches.
