The Jays also drafted five pitchers in the first 2 rounds, even though their system is loaded with high end pitching prospects. They also took 2 outfielders in the sandwich round last year. The draft is still a crap shoot. You never know who will turn out to be a star. Scout well. Pay your money and cross your fingers.

just because he's the best player on their board doesn't actually make him the best player on the board regardless of money spend on scouting. Soler and the draft were not mutually exclusive meaning just because you draft players doesn't mean you can't sign free agents regardless of who they drafted and the position you play. That's almost like saying the rockies shouldn't bother drafting a shortstop since they have Troy Tulowitzki.

From what I have read, Davis has hit quite well this season. He has a lot of upside. The Jays are also rumored to have signed third round outfielder Anthony Alford. Alford is a two sport star who slid because he was thought to be undraftable because he wanted to continue to play football. Alford's contract with the Jays will allow him to continue to play football. As far a scouting services such as Baseball America and ESPN are concerned, they can be used as a guideline, but since the Jays have poured more money into scouting than either of those sources, I believe the Jays who say they took the best player on their board when they drafted Davis.

Given the drafting of Davis and Alford, I suspect that The Jays were not serious players in the Soler sweepstakes.
