Red Sox close to signing Taiwanese shortstop

Jun 12, 2012, 6:54 PM EST

Tzu-Wei Lin

The Red Sox are set to ink a $2.05 million deal with shortstop Tzu-Wei Lin of Taiwan, the Boston Globe reports.

Lin, a left-handed hitter, was rumored to be signing with the Yankees in 2010, but at 16 then, Taiwan declared him too young to turn pro. Now 18, he’s set to receive a bonus about six times as great as the one the Yankees were set to give him.

A speedster with little in the way of power potential, Lin is listed at 5’8″ and 160 pounds. Back in April, MLB.com ranked him 18th in a list of this year’s top 20 international prospects, making him the lone Asian player on the list.

Here’s MLB.com’s scouting video:

      Kaz Matsui died?

If the RSs are signing this SS that must mean that the guy sucks.

The RS wouldn’t know a decent SS id it jumped a bit them in their collect asses.

Yeah, if only they could find and develop a top class SS like Hanley Ramirez or someone. Then again I don’t think they’ve ever managed to find a player like that.

I was listening to this Nomar Garciaparra guy on the TV the other night, dunno who he used to play for but it seems he was a pretty good short stop. They should ask him for advice.

    I wish I had a Taiwanese name.

    Is he scrappy?

    • biasedhomer - Jun 12, 2012 at 10:20 PM

Based on the amount of arm protection he is wearing (along with the chin strap), I’d say no. What’s he hiding? A robot arm?

  6. romoscollarbone - Jun 12, 2012 at 10:33 PM

The Sox can have him. Mark that one down.

  7. pisano - Jun 13, 2012 at 1:19 AM

Who in Gods name haven’t they signed?

    • proudlycanadian - Jun 13, 2012 at 7:09 AM

Have they signed anyone named “Jesus”?

      • kylecleric - Jun 13, 2012 at 8:13 AM

Yes. But he’ll be in the Gulf Coast League.

      • proudlycanadian - Jun 13, 2012 at 8:22 AM

Does this Jesus walk on water?

      • hanasan1 - Jun 14, 2012 at 9:50 AM

Not that I am aware of. They did trade for a “Jason” once. He turned out to be just another dumb canuck who chose to go play in a much larger park. His offensive numbers have plummeted…. probably close to what this Taiwanese kid’s numbers would be. Don’t you agree…eh?

  8. nemike - Jun 13, 2012 at 5:41 PM

What a freaking waste of time, energy and money. This kid will be eaten alive by major leaguers. Way too freaking small and a waste of time at the plate.

    • samuellsamson - Jun 13, 2012 at 6:24 PM

Yes it’s true. No middle infielder can prosper if he’s 5’8″ and 160 lbs at age 18. Though Dustin Pedroia is supposedly 5’8″ (in his stockinged stilts) and 165 lbs and won the AL MVP at age 25. So on reflection you are talking complete nonsense.
