The Nats were supposed to embark on this perilous odyssey through the NL and AL Easts -- 33 games to show their contenderworthiness. Thus far, they're 14-8 with one rainout and 10 games to go. Marred only by their continuing inability to win in South Florida.

Kudos to young Jhonaton Solano on the occasion of his first MLB homer. Young Mr. Harper's homer has been discussed at length elsewhere, so I will resist the urge to commit overkill here.

As a public service, here is the partial score of this afternoon's game: Washington 5. Strasburg pitched 6, 2 R, 5H, 8K, 1 BB, 89 pitches. And a homer by Jose Bautista. No shame in giving up a homer to Jose Bautista. Rookie Tyler Moore has his first 2 MLB homers and a double.

I'm pretty sure you're overstating defense. O's are right behind the Yanks (and realistically if it wasn't for a 2 week stretch of silent bats they'd easily be in 1st) and with the horrendous defense we have, our record is a direct effect of our bats... and bullpen. We have no #1 or #2 starting pitchers, just a bunch of 3-5 guys and still manage to be 1 game out of first. While I do think replacing Arrieta or Hunter at the trade deadline would be monumental to this teams success, as long as the bats continue to stay hot we continue to win.

HOWEVER... having Davis at first, Roberts back at second and a defensive stud in Hardy at short? O's are only hurting on the hot corner. Can't imagine how bad it would be if we had no Roberts, no 1B and Reynolds playing everyday. Oh wait, I didn suffert through the 2011 season!

I must apologize in this case for not complimenting Tweeter for lighting up Tommy for my visiting friend birdman. Tis a far far better thang he done than he has ever done did before.

The excellent blues were provided by Graham Drout and One Dead, One Missing. I should also add that birdman made a pretty good job of polishing off one of Tobacco Road's Jurassic Park turkey club sandwiches too.

I've been scanning the papers and Feesh blogs this morning to see if Cooter has been given the Anthony Babington treatment yet. So far, like Dilsey, they endure.

I saw the highlight of Harper's HR, a real shot at 438', but a dwarf compared to Brandon Moss' 1st at Colorado, a 3rd deck facade job that had even the jaded mouthing "wow" in the dugout. That shot, at 450 feet (courtesy Home Run Tracker) was just beyond Inge's 440' monster.

That the A's won was secondary, as the entertainment of watching Guthrie hang sliders in the middle of the plate was paramount to a fan base unused to power displays, at least since the late 80's Bash Brothers or their late 90's reincarnation in the Giambi/Tejada years.

Not that Colon was much better, but he was a little better enough, so that the Tulo (from Sunnyvale, CA) -less Rockies were unable to score in 4 IP against the A's bullpen, now anchored by Ryan Cook (thank you, Arizona) and his 0.67 ERA.

Colon at least threw primarily fastballs, which are more predictable in the lighter air of Denver. Some of those sliders that Guthrie hung must have looked like beach balls to the A's, so truly 5 x 5 were they centered in the strike zone.

Former A Car-Go, with his measly 1.000 OPS, simply had no protection in the lineup tonight, and fanned 3 times.

During the game the broadcast put up a list of former A's now playing in the NL West, something like 17 guys, highlighted by Car-Go and newly-rich Andre Ethier. They couldn't have kept all those guys, nor would they have wanted to, but did they get enough for all that maneuvering? I think the A's record speaks plainly that they did not.

Meanwhile, the countdown to Hatteberg is at T-2.

<blockquote>Who said fielding percentage is the best measure of how good a defense is?</blockquote>

Well you technically didn't say it, but you said this:
<i>Just ask the yankees how valuable defense is...and the majors best fielding percentage.</i>

So what conclusions should we draw from it? You think the Yanks value defense, and the way to show they have a good defense is via fielding %?

<blockquote>but Ill take a team that makes the outs theyre supposed to make over a team that misses the easy ones and makes the tough ones.</blockquote>

Except it's not some 1:1 ratio. You get a great defensive team like the Rays have been running out there, and they are getting to 6-7 more balls a game than the Yankees were. So even if the Yanks make an out on every ball they get to, and the Rays throw 1/6 of those away, the Rays are still making 5 more outs on balls in play than the Yanks are.

Who said fielding percentage is the best measure of how good a defense is? Not this guy! Just said that playing good defense keeps you in games and helps win them. There are plenty other stats out there that show how capable a defense is in saving or winning games (Team Runs Saved/Defensive Efficiency as stated below). I will tell you what fielding percentages does show you (and it amazes me how this is overlooked) that when the yanks do get to a ball, they dont boot it that often. In fact they boot it far less than any other team in baseball. They dont have the fastest guys and are playing with some sub par defensive players (Ibanez the most glaring), but Ill take a team that makes the outs theyre supposed to make over a team that misses the easy ones and makes the tough ones. If you cant get to a ball keep it in front of you and let your solid pitching get you out of the jam (which is how it ties into pitching). You cant just say their starting pitching has been coming around without giving the defense their due.. aka Swisher robbing a HR and Cano and Tex's spectacular scoops the other day, was that pitching or def?) Also, lets not forget the best LF in the game has been missing for practically the whole season as well and they still have the 2nd best record in the majors.

A beautiful evening for a night at the ballpark, though I must mildly rebuke my host for his usual practice of denigrating Tweeter - who lit up Tommy for us, a task I perceived to belong to the Iron Giant. Instead, he provided us with some unneeded air conditioning. We labeled the bottom third of the Marlins order " Murdered Row", as they performed as well as three corpses would. Afterwards, some excellent blues at an old joint called Tobacco Road. A great night all around

Pence is no surprise this year. WYSIWYG. He will give you an .800+ OPS, a somewhat above average throwing arm and average speed. It adds up to a solid player, but not a career All-Star type. It's easy to get excited about him, especially when he is on one of his hot streaks. And he is a player who leaves it all on the field. But fielding range and decisions have always been his weak point.

Having said that, I would take him back in Houston right now.

I understand the atrocious plays by Peralta merit discussion. If he makes sound plays on either of those they're out of the inning with no runs scored. It doesn't change the fact that at least one of the calls - and likely both - we're bad calls by the umps. It's possible the Tigers don't get the calls because their defense is bad (no argument) or because they actually say something when the call is blown, but the fact remains that the umpires are getting the calls wrong. Craig, if you're going to bring up a bad call in the Dodgers game, you should do the same with the Tigers game and not just stick with easy, lazy narrative.

I had the pleasure of escorting another Circling the Bases longtime regular from the vast reaches of the midwest to Macondo Banana Massacre Field last night and was rewarded - along with the good company - with an Iron Giant bobblehead. Then, that mindlessly nodding simulacrum sat by helplessly and watched its prototype whiff four times, three looking, as the Feesh put on another one of their familiar ineffectuality festivals at home plate which included, among other things, the feeding of Jose Reyes to Kelly Shoppach on what was supposed to be a trick scoring play from second in the third inning following a Hanster infield single. Naturally, Shoppach and the ball were waiting for the Hanster like a couple of kids at summer camp on visiting day.

The entire 6-7-8 of the Feesh order is now batting below the Mendoza line, as the recently reconstituted Gaby Sanchez showed no evidence of having figured anything out in treeple-A and both Cooter Coghlan and Black Hole Buck continued their plunge - perhaps the feesh averages are seeking out abyssal vents where they can convert themselves to a sulfur metabolism or something. I do hope Cooter has filled out and mailed in his application for the Fall term at divinity school, because it's difficult to imagine the Feesh dragging his dead weight with them when they hit the road after tonight's joust with the Beanbags.

Mark Buehrle pitched yet another fine unrequited game. What else? Ah yes, my <i>auschlander</i> companion got treated to some heart-and-soul cuisine from that large unnamed island ninety miles south of Key West where all of Macondo's terrible drivers come from - his first <i>maiz y queso blanco</i> arepa. We visited my friend Roberto, who mans the umbrella pushcart just opposite the Clevelander entrance of Macondo Banana Massacre Field and sells hot dogs, <i>chorizos</i> and <i>pinchos</i> for approximately on quarter of what they'll cost you inside. Also, you get to eat before you go in for the game so that the occasional look at Kevin Youkilis' face doesn't put you off your peanuts. I tell you, if I had a Shar Pei with a face like his, I'd shave its ass and make it walk backwards.

Was watching the Dodgers game, and the steal eas at worst a 50-50 play, and highly unlikely to be overturned by any replay system. The throw did beat Gordon (barely), but it looked like his hand reached the base before or at the same time as the tag was applied to his side. They showed about 4 replays, and they were all pretty inconclusive because it's hard to see precisely when the tag hit his body. For what it's worth, Vin thought he was probably safe, and we all know he's no homer.

B Rob has returned and there's our spark plug. 3 for 4, RBI sac fly and looked great. Having an actual lead off hitter in this lineup will make a HUGE difference and now we're hearing in Baltimore that we are officially going to be buyers at the deadline, looking for either 3B, LF or starting pitching help. Few targets already in our sights and I'm really liking the aggressive pursuit here. If the O's stay 10 over .500 heading into the all star break and actually make a solid pitching acquisition? Yanks and the Rays aren't going to have an easy path to winning the AL East...
