Remember how after the 1997 postseason so many people were certain that Livan was certain to bust out into superstardom? Nah, didn’t happen. But he has had a pretty darn good career, and props to him.

Hernandez made the Blue Jay batters look absolutely SPECTACULAR a couple of weekends ago in a series where they looked completely clueless at the plate (as they have been most of the season).

Can’t wait for another NL East team to pick him up and use him as an emergency starter against the Braves where it is a guarantee that he will throw 8 innings of 1-run ball. Le sigh.

Only if he’s starting. As a reliever, he’s been terrible. You could see the opposing batters licking their chops as they came to the plate.

The only good reason for the Braves to keep him is that he couldn’t pitch against the Braves. They never could seem to hit him.

Livan’s an interesting case. He’s never been a great pitcher, and there were a couple of years when he was genuinely bad. But he also hit pretty well, especially early in his career, and he was a good fielder. And he has been a dependable innings-eater. All those factors IMO made him more valuable than his ERA would suggest.

If I had made as much money as Livan, I’d spend my days counting… in a garage by the motorway.
