The Marlins managed 1 earned run vs the Rays this weekend, and that came in the 15th inning of Saturday nights game. All told, the Rays played 33 innings vs the Marlins and allowed 1 earned run. Even with that pitiful performance by the Marlins, they still have the best offense in Florida. The Rays desperately need Longoria back, because the staff can carry them only so far.

Why the decerebrated thumbs down? Randy is absolutely right. At the moment the Feesh are collectively lost at the plate. There is so much dead wood in that lineup right now that an opposing peetcher can just work around anyone who is making contact and go after the six or so who are flailing away like anemones at anything that looks vaguely spherical approaching them. The Iron Giant's implosion at the plate has been terrifying; in two weeks he's lost thirty points off his average and he seems like he's racking up more strikeouts than plate appearances. The guy Slobbering Ozzie is using to "protect" him, Tweeter, is batting .229 and fouls his pants every time he sees a praying mantis. Jose Reyes is the only guy on the team whose average is actually fattening, but now the opposition will work around him too.

The Razed have a good staff, but they're not that good. On the other hand, the Feesh really are that bad. They're playing like the Greek economy. With a couple of exceptions - which really looked like cases of the exasperated pitching staff subconsciously slipping into "what's the use" mode - the Feesh are getting good efforts from their hurlers.

I'll go back to what I said even when they were doing well, though it was apparent they were having a May of smoke and mirrors: this team needs to be blown up. Give up on Tweeter and Buck and get what you can for them. If someone wants to take a flyer at the Hanster and Nolasco, let's see what we can get for them too. The regulars here know I was tearing my hair (a scarce resource) out the whole offseason beating the drums for a trade or signing of a serious impact bat. At this point, if you don't make some major changes you can already kiss this Bridge-at-Remagen campaign goodbye.
