I agree with this.

I also think there’s an aspect to it that, oftentimes, a hitter is locked in in a specific way: he’s swinging hard and so he hits it out of the park; he’s hitting the corners of the OF or off the wall, so he’s likely to get doubles or triples; he slapping the ball effectively and ends up with a bunch of singles.

Hitting for the cycle is harder than that because it means the guy is just locked in in general … maybe it’s a little like a hoops player who is hitting the 3-pointer, jumping over people to dunk, perfect from the free throw line, and also dishing out assists (I realize that’s an imperfect parallel, but I think that basketball player is more locked in that a guy who’s “only” unconscious from three-point range or who can’t miss a free throw, etc.)

The Pirates were off today and traveling back to Pittsburgh to take on the Twins in a 3 game series. The good pitching has faltered lately, but have been picked up by a surprising offense that ranks 4th in the NL in the last month. Most recently leading this charge is Pedro Alvarez, who hit 4 homers in the last 2 games and whose hot/cold streaks are becoming legendary in Pittsburgh.

Congratulations to Hill. He had become stale in Toronto and the trade seemed to help both him and Johnson. It was a good trade for both teams and both players. Both Hill and Johnson resigned with the team that traded for him.

Agreed, the only “clown question” is the one left unasked. As to placing a higher value on rarity, perhaps a simple example serves best. Say one has two stamps. The 10 cent stamp is a perfectly preserved one of Millions of identical stamps, while the 1 cent stamp is worst condition of only three, but the only one offered for sale. On which is the most value placed, given the face value of 10 cents is obviously greater?

I’ve never quite understood the apparent reverence for the cycle. It is indeed an amusing variety pack, but it seems to me that a double is always better than a single, a homer is always better than a triple, so 2 homers and 2 doubles would obviously be a better performance and accomplishment than a cycle. But I’m openminded, so can someone explain how a cycle is a better performance than say, 3 homers and a double? If Billy Batter already has his homer, triple and double, should he stop at first after hitting a gapper because the cycle is such a great accomplishment?
