Presenting the Rays’ 1979 throwback uniform

Jun 20, 2012, 6:56 PM EDT

That the Tampa Bay Rays didn’t exist in 1979 isn’t going to stop them from participating in the “Turn Back the Clock” festivities on June 30. They unveiled their retro uniform Wednesday, with Joe Maddon doing the modeling.

source:

The uniform itself certainly has the ’70s aesthetic. Still, it would have been nice if they could have gone with something different than the color scheme the Brewers and Mariners were using at the time. The logo, with the lower case “b” and the yellow wheel in the middle, is strikingly similar to the Brewers’ “b” with a baseball in the middle. I’m giving this a thumbs down.

    Really original, Rays…

I thought the same thing: Padres, 1978.

Now I see why people think he is a weird wuss.

  3. marshmallowsnake - Jun 20, 2012 at 7:02 PM

I hope this is a bad photoshop job…

  4. professor30 - Jun 20, 2012 at 7:05 PM

it’s not his fault, team managment is out to get him.

  5. rollinghighwayblues - Jun 20, 2012 at 7:05 PM

Only a coward would wear that. That is the theme of Joe maddon this month isn’t it?

  6. phipfwe76 - Jun 20, 2012 at 7:11 PM

I give them a plus for effort and trying to get the 70’s feel.

I give them a negative for it not saying “Devil Rays”.

  7. seeinred87 - Jun 20, 2012 at 7:12 PM

Hideous. The hideousness may have been bearable (and even kind of cool) if those were actual throwback unis. Making up a retro uniform seems really stupid to me.

    • dan1111 - Jun 20, 2012 at 7:27 PM

I think the idea of making up a retro uniform is kind of cool, but I agree that the execution was poor. They should not have gone for the wow-that-is-so-ugly-I-can-believe-people-used-to-think-it-looked-good look. Because no one used to think it looked good. You just made it up right now. And that kind of ruins the effect.

Aside from our disagreement on the coolness of a fake retro uniform, you more succinctly and more eloquently stated the point I was trying to make. I completely agree with everything in your post after that first clause.

    I like em!!

  9. paperlions - Jun 20, 2012 at 7:38 PM

Only a coward would criticize the “rays” pseudo-retro jerseys…that is a chicken shit comment…blah blah blah.

  10. mcsnide - Jun 20, 2012 at 7:52 PM

The Rays never wear ugly uniforms, even in response to other teams wearing ugly uniforms first

  11. taz101 - Jun 20, 2012 at 7:52 PM

    To paraphrase Harper…
    “That’s a clown uni, bro!”

  12. drewmunny - Jun 20, 2012 at 8:05 PM

Do the uniforms have pine tar residue on em? You know, just wondering….

  13. scatterbrian - Jun 20, 2012 at 8:10 PM

    That uni is badass

  14. uniformjunkie - Jun 20, 2012 at 8:32 PM

GUYS! Dontcha GET IT??? Look up the 1979 San Diego Padres Uni…..this one is a SPITTIN’ Image of it! (Colors are…as previously mentioned…Milw Brewers-esque) They are channeling the Padres of that same year…..gaudiness and all!

  15. ndnut - Jun 20, 2012 at 8:46 PM

It should be orange and yellow and the script should say “Devil Rays.”

  16. shanabartels - Jun 20, 2012 at 8:57 PM

The faux retro unis are silly enough in the first place, but no stirrups?! For shame.

  17. drewzducks - Jun 20, 2012 at 9:11 PM

My God ! Someone threw up on Joe Maddon.

    • CJ - Jun 20, 2012 at 11:51 PM

wait for it…………wait for it……. oh yeah, Craig’s on vacation so no one’s here to say “must’ve been a Phillies fan.”

      • drewzducks - Jun 20, 2012 at 11:55 PM

        Too funny.

  18. ironmike778 - Jun 20, 2012 at 9:12 PM

Yeah it’s ugly but pretty much everything was then. They went for the 70’s look and they got it.

    • deadeyedesign23 - Jun 20, 2012 at 10:37 PM

      I disagree sir.

The 70’s. Where the White Sox wore red and the baddest of the bad smoked cigarettes and juggled.

      • ugglasforearms - Jun 21, 2012 at 3:08 PM

Let’s not forget the White Sox also played in shorts during 1976.

This is what American League uniforms looked like in 1979:

No vintage 1970s sansabelt pants? No stirrups? C’mon man.
They seem very 70s San Diego Padres influenced but I like them. Clever idea.

  20. soj83 - Jun 20, 2012 at 11:43 PM

they forgot the “Devil” in the name

  21. Jonny 5 - Jun 21, 2012 at 8:28 AM

    That’s a clown suit Bro.

  22. deathmonkey41 - Jun 21, 2012 at 8:47 AM

Excuse me while I throw up a little.

  23. gotmelk - Jun 21, 2012 at 9:37 PM
