I attended this game last night; my 11-month-old's first game. He seemed to enjoy it as much as an infant can. :) Made it to the 7th inning; considering his bedtime is usually 7:00pm I thought that was good. First game I've attended in years where I didn't keep score though -- hands a bit full this time.

Anyway, so I bought 4 games before the season started, the first was one that was almost rained out but then eventually played in drizzling weather, and yesterday's was stupidly hot. If anyone would like to know two more games that will have terrible weather in DC, I think I've got them picked out. :P

Nothing to add to the game report. The Nats are 17-12 in the toughest portion of the schedule; are 9-6 vs. the AL East; and have (after 67 games) won half as many games as in all of 2011. Their lead expands to 3.5 games over the idle Mets and 4 over the similarly idle Braves. The Rays drop to 3.5 behind the Yankees.

The Nats make their annual trek up Interstate 95 to Bal'mer. Jordan Zimmermann vs. the surprisingly effective Jason Hammel tonight. Over the weekend, perhaps they can sample some of the ongoing War of 1812 bicentennial celebration. You know, Fort McHenry, rockets' red glare, flag still there, all that stuff.

I wasn't at the game so I got to see replay after replay in HD of both the Inge and Norris plays at 2nd. simply awesome defense on both accounts. Inge going for the force at 2nd was ballsy. How often do those throws end up in center field ( and I hate the "take the sure out at first" that we usually get). Correct me if I am wrong but I believe it is Norris' first big league throw out of a base stealer at 2nd.

I'm OK with FP. I don't expect that much of a TV color commentator (which made Rob Dibble's failures all the more glaring). All I want is someone with an understanding of the game to explain things I don't know, and FP does that.

As to the quick-pitch thing, it's one of those rules that's enforced rarely, like the time limit on throwing pitches. Or, the rule that says the umpire can say, the batter didn't try to get out of the way, so it's not a HBP.

My personal experience indicates that five minutes after I turn off my phone/PC/whatever other stupid consumer electronics I have on me, and 2 minutes after I finish my first pool-side frozen drink (if its a double), I am relaxed. And it's not a result of the booze. (Ok, maybe slightly. But seriously, any of my weekend binges do not come with relaxation, rather more of an "I don't give an eff" attitude, which I usually end up regretting when I look at said phone/PC/ whatever other stupid consumer electronics I have on me.)

I agree that recovering from the trip home takes a day, at least, and another day to mentally prepare myself for the mundanity that is the "real world".

There was an earlier thread about Cespedes hitting the walkoff to give the A's a sweep over the best-record-in-baseball Dodgers. This terribly unlikely outcome- it wasn't that long ago that the A's had lost 9 in a row-was fueled by a rare (for Oakland) combination of the opponent being worse offensively than the A's (the Dodgers collected a total of 8 hits in 3 games), some timely hitting by the A's, and some excellent A's starting pitching. McCarthy went 7 shutout in the opener, Milone was a CG 1 ER winner, and Blackley went 8 with 1 ER. The A's only used 4 IP of relief in 3 games . Hello, 1966.

But the best was the A's defense in the 9th yesterday. Inge made a great play on a bunt to erase Matt Treanor at second on a Gordon bunt. Gordon then tried to steal second but was cut down by rookie catcher Derek Norris, playing for the regressing Kurt Suzuki. All of a sudden, Ryan Cook, he of the 0.57 ERA, had two outs and empty bases.

So everything came together and as Steve Berthiaume says on BBTN the A's are a "fun, watchable team."

But he's wrong in calling them a group of young players. Look at yesterday's lineup. Crisp, Gomes, Inge, and Moss have all been around. Pennington is in his 4th year at Oakland. Weeks, Norris, and Cowgill are the true rookies, with Cespedes a rookie officially but having 7 years of organized, professional baseball behind him.

What the A's have done this year is to invest in a basket of cast-off veterans, rather than 1 big name geezer (no more Nomar, or Return of the Giambino, or Big Hurt Redux). They've taken that $ 8M or so and spread it around to 5 or six guys. What they are getting from that is in some games all those guys play like the cast-offs they are and the A's lose. Some games a few guys play well and a few don't. And some games, like in this latest winning streak, the veterans play well. And the young pitchers pitch well, something Oakland has had since 2000.

When a plan comes together it is fun to watch. It's not so much fun when the reality of this team-they are cast-offs for a reason, after all, and kids-shows up and you get those 9 game losing streaks that look like they will never end.

Still, 70,000 were entertained over the three mid-week games. That's tremendous by Oakland standards.

It's rule 8. The comments for 8.01 and 8.01(b) specifically deal with quick pitches.

With runners on base, a pitcher needs to come to a complete stop. With the bases empty, however, pitchers (i.e. relievers, I don't know of any starters who don't use the windup when the bases are empty) don't need to do that. Like you quoted from Wikipedia, though, if it's done with the intention to catch the batter off guard, it's still a quick pitch and ruled a ball.

With the bases empty, however, pitchers (i.e. relievers, I don’t know of any starters who don’t use the windup when the bases are empty) don’t need to do that. Like you quoted from Wikipedia, though, if it’s done with the intention to catch the batter off guard, it’s still a quick pitch and ruled a ball.

From Wikipedia--A quick pitch in baseball occurs when the pitcher throws a pitch to home plate before the batter has had a chance to fully ready himself. It is illegal in all forms of baseball, and it has various penalties, depending on the situation: if there is no runner on base, the pitch is called a ball, but if there are any number of runners, it is ruled a balk. For a pitch to be ruled a quick pitch, it is necessary for one of the umpires to make the ball call or the balk call immediately.

Apparently the umps decided the Nats were ready...As it turns out, the umps were right.

They said quick-pitching was technically legal but not in "the spirit of the game." Is there a rule on this I can look at?

Oh, and speaking of Philadelphia, Cholly is at it again, praising the Nats left-fielder for his hustle. Problem is, Harper doesn't play left-field, the rookie who often plays left-field is named Steve Lombardozzi. He also hustles, but his name is harder to spell.

The Road features no milkshakes - it has no pretenses at being the local Jack Rabbit Slim's - but it does offer a middling key lime pie. I make a better one. Theirs is kinda wussy - it's smooth and creamy, whereas a real key lime pie should be sharp with a slightly mossy backtaste and smack you right in the tongue, like someone challenging you to a duel.

I might well drag myself down to Homestead today and indulge in the milkshake, though. So, was I right about those damned things, or was I right about them?

Haha, when I first started watching the Nats, I wasn't terribly fond of him either. Now I enjoy listening to both him and Bob Carpenter. Mickey Redmond said that when he started out, he was told that a color commentator's job isn't to talk about what's happening, but why it's happening. I think Santangelo does a really good job of that. I especially like that he lists a pitcher's repertoire once he enters the game; I always like to know what pitches a pitcher can throw.

Though if they did say quick pitching with the bases empty is legal (I missed that), they were wrong.
