It is technically wrong, but I agree with you about Youk. Youkilis had an ornery reputation, but it generally served him well. Beckett is the true douchebag I wish we had shed long ago.

(for the newb's - it's always "Red Sox". Just as it's always the "Yankees" - even when referring to a singular player. "The greatest Yankees player of our generation is Derek Jeter". It sounds wrong, but team names are proper names. Maybe Old Gator has a different take on this. Of course, the name of the stadium in the Bronx only confuses this by being identified as "Yankee Stadium" - which in turn, I maintain, should mean "Yankee" refers to the slang for northeasterners and not specifically the team itself.)

C'mon, dude. Get real. Idealism of that sort has no place in baseball.

Smart teams don't trade current or former All-Stars within their division, in the heat of a pennant race, even when they appear to be limited by injury.

OF COURSE The Duke would trade for Youk if the price is right. He drafted him. But it's naive to think that the Sox would deal a piece to a divisional rival that would potentially improve that team.

A team, btw, that has already been giving the Sox fits for the past 9 months.

Name the last trade that the Red Sox executed within the AL East . . .

2009 . . . the Sox purchased Joey Gathright from the Orioles.

In fact, the Red Sox have made 4 trades with the Orioles since 2006 . . . all of them occurred without the O's being any threat to the Red Sox making the playoffs.

So again truly smart teams NEVER deal intra-division to a team that represents a potential obstacle to making the post-season.

And no O's fan should find that insulting because it means that your team is truly relevant again . . . just not that relevant . . . yet ;-)

Youk has been a fierce player. He works at the game and plays hard. It is just so hard to fathom that this man contributes so much to the team gets such little respect. I've always enjoyed watching him play when I go to Fenway or watch on television. He went from 1st to 3rd for Gonzo and the team. Does every player do what is in the best interest of the team without publicly making an issue out it? Third base certainly takes the wear and tear on the body. So, obviously, he has been beaten up and bruised.

Whenever I go to Fenway, he still gets those loud cheers. Loud. It hasn't stopped. Why do some people on the internet seem to give the guy such a hard time? I don't know. I love the guy and hope he is here. I don't get the ugly either. He is a normal looking guy.

The amount of charity work he does off the field is a completely different issue. There is always something going on that Youk is sponsoring to give back to the community. Meet and greets, beers, raffles, events at the Mohegan Sun, just tons of things that he does to help our society.

I know the charity and the cheers don't make him a keeper to a lot of folks, but I still think he's got a lot in his tank.

Yeah, I rip on Angelos all the time, feel free to find the last time I said anything about him.

Being an alleged "civic hero" has nothing to do with the ability to run a baseball team. He is horrible at it. How good or bad other owners may have been is irrelevant to the fact that the one man is responsible for the Oriole's being horrible for so long.

Now Toronto. Let's say you wanted to say a hated player on Toronto was not to your liking. For example, let's say that this particular Blue Jay blows. Is there any nickname you could give such a gentleman?

They should give Stairway a sitcom.

Youkilis currently has an OPS+ of 81. Below average, yes, but not replacement level. He has not been getting consistent playing time and when considering that he was still above average offensively last year (OPS+124), to call him replacement level is ridiculous. Also, when you consider that current White Sox 3B Brent Morel has a whopping OPS+ of 15, an OPS of .420 (which is sub replacement level) and that the White Sox as a lineup have four below average offensive players, apparently replacement level isn't a dime a dozen.

How anyone could read what I wrote as a slam on Duquette (or think that Duquette has had anything to do with the Orioles' performance this year as everyone playing well was already on the team) is beyond me. Duquette still works for Angelos and I seriously doubt that Angelos would allow a trade with Boston that could blow up on them down the road....and Angelos still has final say on everything...which is why everyone else Baltimore wanted as GM pulled out of the "competition" for the job.

I would think that largely depends on how much of Youk's contract they're willing to eat. If they cover a substantial portion of it, then the other team should be willing to give more in return. At least, that's how I look at it. Otherwise, given Boston's got plenty of capital, they could just keep Youk and give Gonzo some time off from time to time. Not like he's been hot at the plate lately.

How anyone could downgrade Dan Duquette, given what's happened with the Orioles this year, is beyond me.

And may I remind you that he traded for Pedro Martinez. Twice.

Get the narrative straight: Duquette is a jerk. But he's good at evaluating talent.
