Another one-run loss to crosstown rivals Los Gigantes after Brandon Moss did his best torero imitation and ole'd 3 in the 6th inning. Moss can certainly be forgiven the first error since he's a converted OF just learning the position. The other two, not so muh.

As I watched Tyson Ross labor into the 6th I asked my girlfriend "Why do the A's carry 7 relievers if they aren't going to use them?" That was rhetorical, but then Bob trotted out gasoline-men Blevins, Fuentes, and Norberto who promptly threw 4 more runs on the fire via 4 hits and 5 walks in 2.1 innings.

And the Giants needed every one of those runs as their own bullpen was less than stellar, allowing the A's to score 4 in the bottom of the 9th, saved only by the arbitrary positioning of runners on a two-out ground-rule double, otherwise the game is tied. Weeks then popped up to end the improbable rally and give the Giants the series win with one game left today.

And what a great game this could be: Cain v. McCarthy. Whereas yesterday was a festival of run scoring. Today, 1 run could be enough: big ballpark, high sun, just don't hit it to Moss.

It was a close game in Miami, yesterday. Brett Cecil pitched better than I've ever seen him. Location, command, movement: he had 'em all. Ive never seen Josh Johnson before, but he can deal, take it from me. The score reflects the Feesh boolpen's Marmol-like squandrification of Johnson's gem of a game. Most notable were the homers, though. You hang a mistake in front of Rasmus or E5 and those guys are not going to miss it. The striking difference in Rasmus's approach and swing have really helped his offence. He's straighter at the plate, a small step instead of a big kick, and the swing is shorter. He gets to inside pitches extremely well now and he doesn't dip under the ball anymore. He's nearly a mirror image of E5 when that swing starts. Since June, as the sample size grows, it's becoming obvious that Tony's kid can play him some baseball.

Feather Lice 7, Feesh 1, and the Piffle Piscids' boolpen is hyperextended, burned out and in total disarray after a top-o-da-ninth from hell. The submarine demolition duo of Steve Cisek and the Mujic Man coughed up a pair of dingers, including a solo shot to Encarnacion and a slam to Colby Rasmus, in between which Cisek balked runners to second and third, then lost it completely and bungled a sacrifice bunt. It's tough to make the current play when the last one is still wedged in your dendrites, you know? The Feesh scored their own traditional run in the seventh inning, which was their way of patting Josh Johnson on the back and saying "Nice work JJ, and now that we;ve gotten you off the hook - off the hook, get it? Feesh? Never mind - anyway, now that we've gotten you off the hook, why don't you go take a rest and let someone else take the loss." Part of it may be the monsoon weather of the past week; the Rusty Giant opined that the team was playing without energy. If the pressure has been building at Macondo Banana Massacre field at least we've got a reliable vent in Solobbering Ozzie (duly noting that among icthyologists, "vent" is actually the technical term for "asshole"). While the team held a players-only meeting, the Gizzard of Oz met with the local spawrts press and unburdened himself of this comment: "Bad teams have meetings. Weenning teams keeck ass..I was een my office talking to a couple of coaches about how to make thees team better," the manager said. "When I said, 'How can we make thees team better?' They rolled their eyes. That's not a good sign." The on-field performance may such but man, we give great sound bite.

On the positive side, Ozzie does show some evidence of recalling the tushy biting he received at the beginning of the season for his revolutionary pronouncements, saying "I don't go een there [the meeting]. I got some of keeds in there and I don't want maybe to say something I regret." Ozzie's got a point there. This team was represented as a nice mix of veterans and young ballplayers, and that's how the chemistry is working out: the veterans are slumping, and the young ballplayers are learning how to slump from them.

And that's how it is with a disintegrating team in panic mode. Last night, with no games to watch - today's feature matchup is R A Dickey versus the Borg, of course - I betook myself to a fundraiser for a local environmental organization being held at a disco in a converted villa near downtown Macondo. I didn't stay long - disco is audial feces and the constant downpours made the beautiful gardens unusable as a relief route - but one of the features of this party was that three tony local eateries were offering a variety of invasive species cuisine including chargrilled python with Asian noodle salad, lionfish ceviche, pulled wild boar sliders and northern snakehead sushi. It was like eating brains - it killed the pain of being despondent.

There was a nice pitching battle going on between Miami and Toronto until the Jays scored 6 runs in the top of the 9th. Both Johnson and Cecil pitched well.

There is a silly error in the AP news wire about the story. Reed Johnson was credited with scoring a run for Toronto. It has been a long time since Reed has played for The Jays. Kelly Johnson was the guy who scored the run that came in between Encarnacion's lead off homer (his 21st) and the slam by Rasmus.

Cecil had been ineffective in the spring and in his early starts in Double A. His season and possibly his career turned around when he got some tips from a former Jays pitcher who happened to be in town to visit a son who played for the Fisher Cats. I am not a fan of the ex Jays pitcher, so I will just call him Roidger. Roidger tweaked Cecil's delivery. This enabled him to hide his pitches better and to gain more control. Cecil practiced what he was told and began to pitch a lot better.
