You are right, I don’t have hard evidence. But he did sign for $4M guaranteed (not prorated) to play less 60% of the season for Texas, with another $1m bonus if he makes a certain number of starts (essentially, if he starts for the rest of the year), that indicates that he was probably wanting at least $8M to play for the year.

I do not believe you have hard evidence to back up your contention. Granted, mine also lacks verifiable empirical data, and perhaps begging was overstating it a bit, but his first choice was St. Louis, and he wasn’t asking a fortune.

I don’t think he was ever begging to be a Cardinal. If that was true, he would have been one…he always wanted more than they wanted to spend on him. He was setting a price that wasn’t particularly cheap, which, by definition, is not begging.

This is why you sign Oswalt when he was almost begging to become a Card. This is why you consider using a six-man rotation, when you have a recovering Wainwright, a converted starter in Lynn, Garcia, Lohse and Westbrook who all are 6 inning pitchers for various reasons. Kelly has been adequate, but he is raw even with his power sinker.

Hard to say who else is out there, but I hope the management is prudent. A set back is a set back, not an automatic disqualifier. Mid-August returns of Carp and Puma might just get the job done.

Well, Miller is currently posting an ERA of 6.00 and has coughed up 15 homers in 66 innings…

…so I’d say the possibility is very, very low at this point.

Probably not, I think the Cardinals will be looking to take young/promising/durable as their primary adjectives, over older/veteran/proven just because of the injuries faced already this season.

If Carpenter doesn’t pitch this year, that would make it 4 entire seasons that he has missed while under contract with the Cardinals (pretty much. He pitched a combined 21 innings in 2007 and 2008). 4 out of 10!

Man, he’s wonderful when he’s around, but when he is hurt, he is huuuuuuuuuuuurt.

If they had known a couple of weeks ago that this would happen, would they have thrown more money at Oswalt to try to get him? They have done a very good job patching things together through injuries, but may regret not getting Oswalt.
