Until diagnosed with it 15 years ago, you thought maybe its an ulcer, something in the colon causing a bleed, and a lot of TUMS, then going in and having four units of blood in a transfusion, then you realize it’s pretty serious. And after learning the hard way and just undergoing my third trip to the hospital for transfusions, it’s iron supplements the rest of your life. Not that it’s unmanageable or really tragic, it’s not, there’s lots worse, but the anemia it causes can be handled you just have to be smart, a little careful, and he’ll be just like normal, that’s all. A problem that can be managed.

His diet – not tobacco- has been a sticking point with the Red Sox for some time. He’s admitted that his food intake consists of fast food and little else.

Doesn’t matter if he’s got a high metabolism and can keep the weight off. His cholesterol and acidity is still likely to be off the charts, and both of those things can lead to significant problems – as we are likely seeing here.
