Dunno what the hell Zahn was talking about…. D’Arnaud has fielding percentages of .993, .996, .993, .991 in his last 4 seasons.

The Phillies didn’t exactly give up on him. He was one of the cornerstones in the trade with the Blue Jays for Halladay. The Blue Jays all but demanded that he be involved in the trade. They weren’t going to give up Halladay for peanuts.

PCL is a nasty tear. There is no good way to go in to repair it, so he better hope it heals ok on its own.

Last week Greg Zahn was on Prime Time Sports talking about how he and scouts he talked to in spring training don’t think D’Arnaud is very good defensively, in fact he was saying that it’s crazy the Jays would consider moving a known quantity who’s improved immensly behind the plate and also shown that he can call a big league game and handle the pitching staff to bring up a guy who’s unproven in the majors and at this point considered (again by Zahn and these scouts) below Arencibia defensively, he also pointed out that Arencibia won the PCL MVP award two years ago with better offensive numbers then D’Arnaud has this year.

Not sure it amounts to anything but it was a good counter point to everyone assuming D’Arnaud will just easily move Arencibia aside. I think what it does show is the Jays have two valuable chips behind the plate, hopefully they can use them to finally make them a contender again.

In spring training, Arencibia told d’Arnaud that since both of them were going to be major leagues, not to be shy about asking him anything. They consequently got along fine. Arencibia is a great leader and is well respected in the club house.

He is still likely to be called up as soon as Las Vegas finishes their season. Yan Gomes will take over as the primary catcher in Vegas. Even though Gomes was born in Brazil, he grew up in the US and is probably a US citizen and thus is a candidate to replace d’Arnaud in the Futures game. Gomes is .344/.574/.962 at Vegas.
