Andy Pettitte suffers fractured ankle, will miss six weeks

Having already placed CC Sabathia on the DL Wednesday, the Yankees suffered an even bigger blow this afternoon: Andy Pettitte will miss at least six weeks due to a fractured left ankle suffered when he was hit by a comebacker in the 5-4 win over the Indians.

Pettitte was removed from Wednesday’s game in the fifth inning after taking a Casey Kotchman liner off his leg. He made several warm-up throws afterwards and even threw a pitch to Lou Marson, but he limped around immediately afterwards and was replaced by Cody Eppley.

Kotchman’s shot went as a single to lead off the fifth. Marson followed that with another single and came around to score off the Yankees’ second reliever of the inning, resulting in the lone earned run charged to Pettitte.

Pettitte also allowed an unearned run following an Alex Rodriguez error in the third inning.

Pettitte had seven strikeouts in four-plus innings before departing today. Maybe the Yankees’ best starter in the month and a half since he returned to the majors, he’ll head to the DL sporting a 3.22 ERA and a 1.09 WHIP in nine starts.

The Yankees already intended to have Freddy Garcia replace Sabathia in the rotation through the All-Star break. Now they might need Adam Warren to step in as well. Warren is 5-5 with a 3.86 ERA in Triple-A, but he’s gotten stronger as the year has gone on; in June, he has a 2.03 ERA in five starts.

Being 40 and a year away from the game, it’s amazing how great Andy’s been. That is absolutely difficult to do. I have nothing but respect for him.

Kotchman didn’t score. He was thrown out at home. Marson scored. I was told Pettite threw one pitch to him before being replaced. Marson hit a single and went on to score.

    Broken ankle, dammit

  4. sabatimus - Jun 27, 2012 at 3:44 PM

    Wow that sucks.

  5. stex52 - Jun 27, 2012 at 3:46 PM

That is really bad luck. My guess is Andy is not back. I know a little bit about older joints not healing.

Won’t mind if he proves me wrong, though.

And this is why you never, ever say “we have enough pitching.”

  7. SmackSaw - Jun 27, 2012 at 4:00 PM

Awesome! I hate the Spankees. My favorite teams are the Angels and whomever is playing the Yankees. I hope all their oldtimers breakdown. Jeter’s next.

Gee, could you be any classier? OK, hate the team, but cheer a broken ankle and hope that others get hurt? Not cool at all.

Are you through choking your LBJ doll after his smackdown of your Celtics’s nursing home and crybabies.???? Angels are a good team but don’t need lower class primate fans like you. Now take your prozac and keep repeating , Jeter’s hitting 325 , Jeter’s hitting 325 and no one on Bloody Sox is !! And say hi to Curt Schilling for us too. Losers stick together.

He could use some of those PEDs right now…

    • dondada10 - Jun 27, 2012 at 4:30 PM

Right. Which steroids are the ones that fix broken bones?

      • goskinsvt - Jun 27, 2012 at 4:42 PM

seemed to work out ok for his elbow

      • dondada10 - Jun 27, 2012 at 4:51 PM

        From your link:

Pettitte was one of several Yankees named in the Mitchell Report, released on December 13, 2007. Mitchell and his staff received the information on Pettitte from McNamee, who told them he injected Pettitte with HGH on 2–4 occasions in 2002 so that he would heal from an elbow injury quicker.[37] Pettitte verified McNamee’s claim, admitting to using the HGH on two occasions in 2002, as it was meant to help heal an injury, and not to enhance his performance.

The elbow injury was to a ligament. PEDs, granted, will help you recover from ligament and tissue injuries.

Karma from the foul ball “catch”

  11. buffalomafia - Jun 27, 2012 at 4:32 PM

Start hustling to make a trade for another pitcher?

Do not get a ham & egger either!!

  12. dondada10 - Jun 27, 2012 at 4:33 PM

I’m certainly not a Yankees fan, but I don’t get this hatred for Pettitte. I understand that he was a user during the PED-era, but reveling in injuries is the epitome of douche-baggary.

    • badintent - Jun 27, 2012 at 11:00 PM

Just Boston nerds, nitwits, and thugs. You already known them as the Kennedys and left wing radicals. They are like termites , they come out every 17 years. The rest of the time, they throw rocks at their TVs when Big Blue beats the Pats in the SB. Andy will come back to pitch and win the winning game in the WS

  13. daviddmsvcp - Jun 27, 2012 at 5:56 PM

heh heh heh As Tweety Bird said, ‘he don’t know me very well, do he?’

Look for Andy to be back in the rotation as the Yankees go into the play offs

  14. kev86 - Jun 27, 2012 at 7:22 PM

Rub some cream on it ya cheater!

  15. lax12345 - Jun 27, 2012 at 7:52 PM

At 40 he is still better than most pitchers. It sucks they lost cc and now him. I wonder how Adam Warren is hopefully he’ll do good.

  16. theskinsman - Jun 28, 2012 at 3:13 AM

Andy is a cheater and a liar, but one very good pitcher. I’m not sure he makes it back at the level he’s been pitching at his age. I hate the yanks, but never wish harm on any player. I have to admit,I felt much worse for Mo when he got hurt.
