Second paragraph – yes, MLB just makes up policies as it goes along, because that is what it should do. Whatever is for the “good of the game” will be dealt with. This changes and will continue to change as the game evolves.

It is a bunch of 20 something dudes who have had a sugar coated existence thus far in life. You know…participation ribbons…everyone gets playing time…if you beat me you can’t do it too badly cause’ my feelings will be hurt. That sorta’ thing. If the slide/kick was a problem, Valentine would’ve had Rasmus drilled at the plate.So, either the Sox didn’t consider it an issue, or were satisfied with drilling the Jays pitching staff instead.

what I said was the extra kick was a little much but otherwise takeout slides are completely legit. this article starts with the clear intention of disagreeing with the art of a takeout slide in general, which is just part of baseball. the sallypants-ness is a constant topic on this blog.

I don’t want to make this all about Rasmus, but the baseball rule book doesn’t really cover any of these on-field situations. There’s no rule about intentionally throwing at hitters, but that doesn’t stop players from getting suspended. There was no rule covering Albert Belle’s forearm decking of Fernando Vina, but damn right he got suspended. There’s no rule that says you can’t bring a gun on the field and take out the center fielder, but I’m guessing that’d also be frowned upon.

No, there’s certainly no chance of Rasmus being suspended. But when it comes to on-field incidents, MLB just makes up policies as it goes along.

Don’t expect a suspension as this act is not technically against the rules. If he can reach the bag the fielder is fair game. Bush league, perhaps, but not illegal.

No doubt Mathew has a hate-on for the Jays. He’s the author of any article that could be perceived as negative towards TO. ProudlyCanadian is as potentially biased as me, but if he check his past posts, he’ll see. He would not write an article about an overaggressive slide if it were another team.

And based on the thumbs up/down distribution, this site has a lot of whiny old men on it. Gimme a break, they’re not knitting out there you bunch of fairies.

But HBT is great on balance. At least you guys don’t delete my posts like your bastard corporate football cousins.

Where do you think the screenshot came from, proudlycanadian? Trust me, I watched it over and over again.

As for the NESN guys, Orsillo objected initially, Remy didn’t care and they moved on quickly. I don’t see any reason to base my reaction to the play on their reaction to the play.

FWIW, if I was doing the game, I would have blasted Rasmus then and Encarnacion later for his ridiculous error/failure to cut off the ball. And then I probably would have gotten fired. I like this seat better.

Thank you. Rasmus was trying to pevent a double play and succeded. I suspect that if Matthew took a closer look at the play, he would realize that he goofed.

He kind of swung his leg around, to take out Pedroia’s legs, which he did. Clean play in my opinion. Hopefully we’ll get some replays after the game.
