Blown calls happen, live game action is incredibly fast, and unfortunately, due to MLB, the umpires are placed in a position where they need to be perfect because the viewers at home are better equipped to make a correct call by seeing multiple angles and speeds of replay.

I hate to be an umpire apologist (okay, I actually don’t…) but I don’t think this is an “obvious play” in real time. Hell, most umpires would call the runner out based solely on the fact that the ball beat him to the bag, a tactic which is much worse/lazier but never receives the same criticism when a call is missed.

I tend to place more blame here on Major League Baseball holding their umpires to an impossible standard. Sure, it was a blown call, but I’m not convinced it was as egregious as some think.
