Byrd isn’t actually serving his suspension now, so why should his pay be docked? It’s not like he will have finished serving his suspension sometime in mid-August. He’ll start serving his suspension when/if some team signs him. Given his offensive decline over the last four years and his disastrous season this year, the best he can hope for is an NRI.

Doesn’t seem fair.. in fact I wonder if the Red Sox have any case to get any money back? Had they known the test was positive they may not have released him and saved a few bucks.

You can take it a step further and if he knew he’d fail a test, maybe he did his best to get released knowing he wouldn’t lose any money.
