Nyjer Morgan tussles with Reds fan in front row

Jun 27, 2012, 6:23 PM EDT

Nyjer Morgan

Actually, this was more the providence of alter ego “Tony Plush.”

Nyjer Morgan attempted to reach into the stands down the right-field line to grab a flyball in Wednesday’s game, got tangled up with a Reds fan and then sort of shoved him off with his glove afterwards.

MLB.com has the video.

If it ended with the glove shove, it probably would have been nothing. Morgan jawed with the fan for a few seconds afterwards, though, before umpire Marty Foster helped direct him back to his position.

“It’s just one of those things where we were tangled up; I could have made a play on the ball,” Morgan said. “I just gave him a little, ‘Get off me,’ because he was all on my arm and everything. Nothing major, but everybody might blow it up a little differently.”

Morgan said afterwards that he didn’t have a problem with the fan’s actions in trying to get the ball for himself.

“That’s what the home fans are supposed to do, try to take the ball from the opposing team when the ball is in the stands,” Morgan said. “It’s fair game once the ball is in the stands.”

So, why the shove then?

I can’t believe I liked this guy and bought his jersey (which I now wear when cleaning house). If Jayson Werth does nothing else, he earned his $$$ for getting Nyjer off our team.

No big deal. He was just channeling his inner Seinfeld and heckling a heckler.

You are too worked up today Matthew. You are upset over a minor incident here and you possibly slandered Rasmus earlier in the day. With regard to Rasmus, both the broadcast crews that covered the game did not interpret the play the same way you did.

This one is even more innocuous. The fan grabbed Morgan’s arm and he barely gave him a shove in response. I’d be annoyed at that guy, too.

      • natslady - Jun 27, 2012 at 6:47 PM

Look carefully at the video. The guy didn’t grab Morgan’s arm. His momentum when reaching for the ball caused him to fall on Nyjer’s arm. And he didn’t reach into the field of play. The fan was not in Nyjer’s space, Nyjer was in his. And then Nyjer, deliberately, shoves the glove at the fan, and jaws at him until the ump intervenes.

Yeah, you’re right. Still not much of a shove. Non-story right here.

      • natslady - Jun 27, 2012 at 6:55 PM

Maybe not, but if a fan did that to a player they would be escorted right off the field to Night Court.

      • djpostl - Jun 28, 2012 at 10:48 AM

According to the fan (and if you read Nyjer’s lips it seems to back the account up) Nyjer then tossed some profanity his way…right in front of a 6 year old kid.

Dude’s a clown and a mediocre player at best.

Didn’t like this guy ever since the way he acted during the fight is Florida. Seems like the biggest piece of garbage in baseball.

  5. natslady - Jun 27, 2012 at 6:38 PM

    Nyjer’s Wednesday:

    1. First inning takes 2 steps back on a routine fly ball to right that drops in front of him for a double.
    2. Bases loaded 1 out in the 6th and he pulls back late on a suicide bunt attempt leaving the guy on third easy pickins AND getting a called strike. Then pops up for the 3rd out.
    3. Men on first and second in the top of the 8th and Nyger stays at first while the guy on second gets thrown out stealing third for the second out.
    4. The foul ball and fan dust up down the RF foul line.

Gotta take the frustrations out on somebody!

Seems like that has always been the story with Morgan. If he’s going great, he’s fun to have around. If he isn’t, he acts like an a-hole. With his OPS at .600, the Brewers are seeing his a-hole side coming out.

    • badintent - Jun 28, 2012 at 3:06 AM

AAA here he comes. Can sit next to ManRam and learn from the worse. Stay classy Boston.Betcha wish Hazel Mae was back in Beanhead town.

  6. sabatimus - Jun 27, 2012 at 7:13 PM

Why the shove? A momentary emotional outburst, probably. We all have them.

    • djpostl - Jun 28, 2012 at 10:50 AM

Yeah and the rest of us get charged with simple assault and go to jail if it happens right in front of people (including police)

    Much ado about nothing.

  8. Walk - Jun 27, 2012 at 9:32 PM

Not the worst thing i have seen him do. Most players would get the benefit of the doubt and maybe a reprimand from their coach. Considering nyjer’s actions in the past though i would expect he might have to talk to someone at mlb about this but i really dont expect anything to come of it.

  9. trackman12 - Jun 27, 2012 at 9:58 PM

Morgan was a great addition to the Brewers last year. He will forever be remembered as the guy who had the walkoff hit in the NLDS, however he has been a headache so far this year. He constantly misses signs, he doesn’t know how many outs there are at times. I think his stay in Milwaukee will be ending soon.

  10. metalhead65 - Jun 28, 2012 at 12:34 AM

as a reds fan no big deal and I would hardly consider that a shove, more like a brush off and he was already turned to walk back by the time the ump got there. he was just pissed he could not make the play.

    • stlouis1baseball - Jun 28, 2012 at 11:39 AM

The shove was chicken shit and him running his mouth immediately afterwards was worse.
      This guy is something else.
If I were HALF as good as he thinks he is I would be playing 2nd Base at Busch Stadium.

  11. bla bla bla - Jun 28, 2012 at 7:53 AM

Really, people? Your delicate sensibilities are upset by THIS? The “everybody gets a trophy” generation strikes again. Grow up or you won’t get your apple juice.

    • djpostl - Jun 28, 2012 at 10:51 AM

Spoken like a guy sitting behind his keyboard sipping on his juice box whilst acting the role of the “Internet Tough Guy”

      • bla bla bla - Jun 28, 2012 at 11:11 AM

Nope… just a guy that’s tired of you sniveling little jerk-offs.

  12. whodeytn - Jun 28, 2012 at 9:18 AM

He’s easily the biggest fool in baseball.

    What a goon.

  13. johnnyb1976 - Jun 28, 2012 at 10:19 AM

He’s nothing but a punk who is more worried about how he looks on the field instead of getting a bunt down to help his team. I’ve never liked Morgan
