Jarrod "The Real Deal" Parker embraced the A's new Maximum Efficiency (tm) offense yesterday, holding the Mariners to 3 hits and 1 run in seven while the A's scored 2 runs on two solo homeruns, their only hits. This outburst gave the A's 10 hits in the 3 games at Seattle, good enough for the 2-1 series win, a result made possible because the Mariners offense is so pathetic and anemic, that despite the massive total of 18 hits in 3 games they could only manage 4 runs. This was dwarfed by the A's prodigious output of 5 runs.

Despite the fact that all 3 games were of the one-run variety, many, many fans of baseball in the Bay Area were actually more interested in Timmy's performance yesterday, some going so far as to refer to the A's-Seattle match-up as the Paint Dry series, preferring it to my play on the impending yacht race in the bay, the Futility Cup. In any event, the game yesterday, aside from watching Parker, was so boring that CSN didn't bother to televise it.

Astros and Padres played the shortest MLB game this year (1:58). Pitching by both young starters was outstanding, but in fairness this was the Astros and the Padres. Brad Mills tried an all right-handed line up against a tough leftie; his brilliant coaching was rewarded with a total of two hits. Fortunately one was the home run by Downs in the third. Little did we know the scoring part of the game was over after that. Back to what we have been arguing about. A coach is a genius or an idiot depending on whether his players perform. Good thing Mills knew Downs was going to hit that homer.

The game was actually well played by both sides, if you discount the need to hit the ball to win. Astros preserved the win with a nifty 7-2 put out at the plate in the ninth. A crowd of exactly 12 over the Mendoza line watched. Boy, that stadium looks empty with only 15,000 in it.

Right now Harrell looks like one of the better waivers moves by the Astros in recent history.

And congrats to the Marlins, Gator. Maybe the long regional nightmare is over.

The hope was that Jordan Zimmermann, one of the starting pitchers with the least teammate support, would benefit from the altitude and, more importantly, the opposing pitcher. By Zimmermann's standard, 11 runs is a month's worth of support. First back-to back double-digit offensive outbursts by the Nats since doing it to the Mets about 5 years ago.

Young Tyler Moore had 3 more hits. A nice story of a kid getting an opportunity and stepping up. Moore has been putting up 30-homer seasons in the minors but plays 1B, a position where the organization has a backlog. Injuries provided the opportunity. Obviously, his .346/.414/.635 line is unsustainable, expecially once the Nats leave Colorado, and it's likely he will return to the bench when Jayson Werth comes back. But he may not see Syracuse again this season.

Glad to see Marco Scutaro returned from his beaning by Stephen Strasburg Monday night. Considering how upset Strasburg was at the time, I'm pretty sure he's glad as well.

The Nats now have the NL's best record (with 3 fewer games played than the Dodgers and Giants) and MLB's #3 record. Their lead continues at 3.5 games; seems that whether they win or lose, the Braves and Mets do the same. Edwin Jackson vs. Josh Outman and his 8.00+ ERA this afternoon, then off to one of their favorite ballparks, Turner Field.

Nice win for the Yankees coming back 2 or 3 times during the game to finally take the lead and hold on for the win. Like I said nice win for the Yankees but I can't help but think I would have preferred they lose and Andy not get hurt.
Anyway now the Yankees welcome the White Sox to the Bronx for a 4 games series having gone 19-5 so far this month increasing their lead over the 2nd place Orioles to 5 games the most of any division leader over a 2nd place team.
Just one more comment on the game. Almost always the one Yankee star or another get the kudos for a Yankees win. Certainly Cano's 2 run HR set the table for the win but Eric Chavez deserves just as much credit if not more for driving in the go ahead run in the 8th inning and having 3 RBI's on the day.

I watched the Angels beat Baltimore handily last night. They seem to be coming on strongly. Trout's catch was spectacular. Weaver pitched very well in his return from an injury. For Baltimore, Jason Hammel got lit up. I wonder if this time he will try to claim that the Angels were stealing signs? He tried out that excuse the last time he was hit hard.
