And he struck out the final 7 batters he faced in his debut against the Pirates. Holy shit was that fun to watch.

Bauer wasn't even the most intriguing 'debut' last night . . . Andrew Cashner's first Start as a Padre was.

6 1/3 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, 9K, 1 BB and 99 MPH on his fastball at 100 Pitches.

The pitch that Bogusevic went deep on was actually the culmination of a very impressive At Bat. Cashner wasn't giving in on anything and Bogasevic had to hit a great pitch - in tight and low at 96mph.

Now go back and look at Cashner's track record as a SP in the minors . . . way more intriguing than anything that he has done in the bullpen at any level.

Look, Bauer is a very promising young pitcher and all, but you have to realize what he is: A fly ball pitcher with extreme difficulties controlling the strike zone. And he has openly said that has no desire to change either of those qualities - in fact, he considers them positive attibutes. That's just a bad combination in that ballpark.

Feh. I wasn't impressed. The Braves are notorious for stinking up the joint when facing a pitcher they've never seen before, but they managed to get men on base fairly regularly. Just couldn't score, because they're not hitting anybody with RISP lately.

The kid has a helluva 12-6 curveball, if he can get it to the plate. There have been far, far worse debuts by far better pitchers. He'll be interesting to watch, if just for his pre-game antics/warmups.

Strasburg's debut was unreal. You can get a DVD of it. For two months reporters followed him around his minor-league starts.
Looked good to me. I seen his velocity go up a bit in second inning hitting 95 while i was watching game on tv. He had trouble early with his curve but his fastball at 92 was cutting the corners. He seemed set up on first base side of the rubber and kinda reminded me of lincecum in the way he held his hands and tilted his shoulders. Changeup was good too, dipped in on right handers the same as his fastball seemed to. He got control of his curve by the third inning, i was surprised to see him lifted but he works out hard prior to a start so maybe that had something to do with it. The announcers seemed to think that was his regular workout though about an hour and fifteen minutes before his start. One last thing while i got that from just the one start i saw on tv his fastball seemed more effective in low 90's than when he topped out at 95. I cannot wait to see him again, i think he is going to do well, just needs to trust his stuff and not overthrow.

I remember Cole Hamels first start in the bigs - it was similar to Bauer's. Hamels faced Cincinnati. Nothing special about his performance that day.

I'm sure you remember Max Scherzer's first game with the Diamondbacks. Or Strasburg's first game too.

I'm sure Bauer will be great. In my fantasy league Bauer was picked up on April 10th. I was one of two teams to bid on him. I didn't get him.

First time starters are a puzzle to teams who have never faced them before. And if they're young - it is exciting to watch. Kerry Wood. Doc Gooden, even Michael Pineda last April and May.

4 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 3 Ks on 74 pitches.....of course it's nothing amazing but it's a promising start. He did bounce a lot of breaking balls off the dirt and had trouble finding the strike Zone after getting ahead in the count but I chalk that up to nerves. Overall not to bad especially since he was facing some decent batters.
