See, this is the problem when people comment on teams they don't watch. Thome's bad numbers came from his pinch-hitting at-bats. The reason why EVERYONE knew Thome would be traded is because he was scorching hot during interleague play where his role was, DH! He can pinch-hit, he never could throughout his career. But of course you're just a homer and clearly have no idea what is going on in the rest of the MLB so you just look at stats and think they tell the whole story.

Thome can't run, can't defend... he's hitting under .250 and only has 5 homeruns this season.

I was happy to see the Orioles do SOMETHING before the deadline... but not when I found out that this was the move.

I would have rather seen them trade prospects to get Koji Uehara back honestly... and he's not even pitching right now due to injury.

Buck needs to stop messing with the line-up, and keep Xavier Avery in there. Hopefully they can keep treading water until the all-star break and Markakis makes it back soon to re-ignite the fire they had earlier in the season.

I just threw the Rays out there off the top of my head. I guess with Scott coming back that makes sense.

One thing I do know is that Jim Thome > Yankees DH right now

I just hate to see Jim on the bench when I think it'd be exciting to still see him hit long balls everyday and pass up some of the juicin' crew on the HR list.

I wouldn't say that I would trade them, but in the middle of a division race if someone blew me away I would consider trading either player. They both look like future studs, but what if you got an older ace starter say 30ish and a solid bat would you consider it? I would. The Orioles have a solid team and I think they are an ace away from being legit. Again someone would have to blow me away if I was the Orioles GM, but I don't say anyone is untouchable.

Shhh!!! The Phillies were quietly trying to distance themselves from this stupid idea that Thome could play the field and then act as a pinch hitter upon the return of Ryan Howard (who they hoped would be sooner than this).

The Orioles deal does ruin my fantasy of seeing Thome traded to the CWS, then somehow finding himself back in Minnesota. (Thus doing the same 4-team cycle twice!)

I'm very excited right now. A lot of it is irrational, because Thome isn't going to hit like he could even at 35...seven years ago. But I love seeing him play, because he can still get on base and still hit the ball a long way.

He'll likely be the everyday DH (unless the Orioles want to play him at third base...) and I believe that he will hit well enough in that role to help the club, which is going through a real down stretch offensively right now.

Simon and Lino are fine prospects, and a lot of Orioles fans (the ones who pay attention to the minors) are upset that Lino is going in the deal--he is one of the few international hitting prospects to show any promise for the Orioles in years, maybe decades--but both are in high-A ball and struggling. Simon isn't striking out enough guys, and Lino is striking out too much. They can both be contributors in the majors, but probably not for at least three or four years.

The Orioles are straggling a bit right now, but they are still in the race. They are in the second wild-card spot and still ahead of Boston and Tampa in the division. They may fade, or outright collapse, the rest of the way and prove a lot of people right, or they could stay in it through the end of the season and if not make the playoffs at least get above .500 for the first time since 1997's wire-to-wire year. Right now, as long as they aren't giving up high-level, advanced talent and can find guys to help them keep the team going through the year, they should make some moves.

The Phillies thought they might be able to get a game or two a week at first base out of him, but his back is not letting him play the field at all and it's unlikely that he can stay sharp enough to be useful on pinch-hitting duty alone.

Ex-Mets and Twins OF Jason Pridie gets the vacated roster spot. He went .370/.442/.652	in 12 games at AAA between signing early in June and going home to Arizona for the birth of a child a couple days ago.

Uhh... What? Bundy is the best pitching prospect in all of baseball, and Machado is in the top five for position players. They should absolutely be untouchable, especially when the Orioles aren't likely to make the playoffs either way.

Good move for the Orioles. Can't expect huge production for him at this point in his career, but didn't have to give up much to get him. Unfortunately, what the Orioles really need is starting pitching. Outside of Bundy and Machado (who are untouchable), they really don't have anything in the system to get a top of the rotation starter. Of course, I'm not sure one starter will give them anything more than a fighting shot at a playoff spot.
