Squad captain Matt Kemp announced Sunday that he’s chosen the Rockies’ Carlos Gonzalez, the Marlins’ Giancarlo Stanton and the Cardinals’ Carlos Beltran to participate alongside himself in the Home Run Derby.

Kemp plans to take part in the contest, even though he’s still expected to be on the disabled list as he continues his recovery from a hamstring injury. His status for the All-Star Game the following night is still to be determined.

Kemp appears to have bypassed NL home run leader Ryan Braun in choosing his squad. With 22 homers, Braun is two ahead of Beltran, three ahead of Stanton and five ahead of Gonzalez and Jay Bruce on the NL leaderboard. It’s possible Braun opted out of the contest, but there’s been nothing so far to indicate that he did.

The AL squad, which will be picked by Robinson Cano, has yet to be announced.

Maybe you should look it up. If you’re gonna call someone how, at least know what you’re talking about.

I’m not a Dodgers fan, but doesn’t it seem kind of selfish of Kemp to participate in this? Especially since his team has struggled majorly lately and they need him back and healthy ASAP.

It’s not selfish, Kemp should be doing what ever he wants, let him bungee jump in fact (I am a giants fan)

An hour or so of unorthodox’d swinging should do wonders for a bum hammy. Is anybody in that dodgers organization awake?

Mike Stanton was a pitcher for the BoSox

and he played Right Field for the Florida Marlins last year!

Great choices. I would have chosen Bruce instead of Gonzalez. But should be a good derby

Color me uninformed, but why is Kemp the captain?

    • cur68 - Jul 2, 2012 at 3:50 AM

MLB made him the captain. No one seems to know the selection process, it seems. That’s been asked before and the answer was “???”.

no Braun = sour grapes from last year’s MVP race, Kemp thought he had it won.

  10. dodgersx1 - Jul 2, 2012 at 1:37 PM

    Kemp is the true MVP
