I was actually thinking of places that had more demanding fans/media and NYC/PHI were the first two that popped in my head. I’ll admit that amount of research I did was about 2 seconds while I was thinking of what I wanted to type.

That is quite a leap to go from NYC, skipping LA and Chicago, to Philadelphia and consider Atlanta that much smaller than Philadelphia. … Popularity and criticism of the teams may be different. But market size is not.

What exactly do you think the Yankees could offer to both the Brewers and Phillies that they’d give up their blue chip trade options? If you tell me the likes of Ivan Nova, Freddie Garcia, and/or Dewayne Wise I will happily laugh in your direction and apply electric tape across your mouth.

I agree; however, one of the most polarizing athletes in sports just did it and credited doing it to his team’s success (Lebron James).

Except we don’t know what’ll both Greinke, because we don’t know what triggers his SAD. it might be large crowds, except there are large crowds in every ballpark. It might be a relentless media, except they exist in every city (everyone has papers to sell).

The only thing we’ve heard come out of Greinke’s mouth in the last few years is the lack of winning on the Royals made him almost quit. He wants to go to a winner. 99% of the other comments are friends of friends of best buds brother’s sister’s hairdresser type stuff (or Lord HeeHaw).

Exactly. Big market media is like being at a party where everybody is talking over each other, and trying to be the loudest, most noticeable person in the room. We saw this in the Red Sox beer scandal, where all the writers have a field day with the pissing contest of “who can act more outraged?” Fewers outlets with fewer writers at each is much less nauseating to digest.

I know that, and I mentioned it above. The “controversies” are created from reporters taking other “sources” as primary material for their articles. In no way does it usually involve the subject at hand.

Regardless, Greinke could just not read the newspaper or refuse to comment on it.

In smaller markets, the media (fewer in number) report only on the games themselves. There is much less extracurricular stuff. The audience is also smaller, and less interested in extraneous things. They just want to follow their team, end of story.

What happens in big markets is that the media are not content to just write on events of the game. There are more media members and a larger, hungrier audience. The competition compels “journalists” to create a controversy which generates interest in their stories.

Look no farther than the reports of dissension on a Red Sox team that is in contention for a wild card. There is simply no need for these types of stories, but people eat them up anyways.

Any chance we can keep this stuff out of the discussion? Unless you are his personal shrink, we have no idea what triggers his condition, how he copes, and whether he could pitch somewhere.

If the Braves do not think they could re-sign him, and use him as a rental, then they are not offer much for him. So why do the Brewers agree to trade him to the ATL? Because there are a few teams that think they can re-sign him and would offer the Brewers more in trade.

Well, churchoftheperpetuallyoutraged – Dave O’Brien is a tool. He’d rather talk about stupid hipster bands and ride motorcycles with Fat Fredi than do some real reporting. Plus the AJC is like Pravda. They will never criticize any move, player, or front office worker of the Braves. They actually do the spin doctoring for the team. Oh and heaven forbid you call DOB or the paper on it. He will blast you as some pessimistic no nothing. I’ve seen him do it to several people on his “blog”. So Greinke would have nothing to worry about really. That being said Greinke is a head case and probably can’t be afforded by the Braves anyway.

I thought that the Sawx would be a good destination for Greinke, given the presence of his former guru Bob McClure.

However, given the the recent failings of guys like Lackey and Crawford I’m not sure ownership would want to take a chance on giving Greinke a big money extension.

If he winds up in ATL and signs an extension that would give them a very promising rotation for this season and beyond. Good on them.

Setting myself up for stupidity here, but I’m really not sure what’s so different about NYC/Phi/Bos than other places. Don’t want to deal with the media stories, don’t read a newspaper (Lebron James special). You’ll have to deal with some media regardless of where you go anyhow.

Also, he pitches in front of packed ballparks already, so it’s not like pitching in Mil/Atl is like being in front of a golf gallery and NYC/Phi is like a drunken frathouse (well maybe it is…).

Atlanta seems like a place Greinke would prefer, it’s a big market but not huge like a NYC or PHI. I think my favorite rumor so far regarding him was possibly landing in Pittsburgh. Had anyone mentioned that during Spring Training they likely would’ve had their media credentials taken away.
