It’s been reported that when Ortiz was with the Twins, he was heavily “encouraged” to be a line-drive opposite field slap hitter, something we all now know is the opposite of his offensive game. When he got to Boston, they let him hit the way he felt naturally comfortable. I’m not trying to be a steroids apologist, because I truly don’t know if he used and to what extent it might have affected his abilities. That being said, I think the different environment and coaching staff is mostly responsible for Big Papi becoming the slugger he is today.

400 HR trivia: Al Kaline finished his career with 399 HR and 3,007 hits. In June 1958 he hit a HR that did not count when the game was rained out after 3 1/2 innings. If that HR would have counted, he would have been the first American League player to have both 400 HR and 3,000 hits in his career.

Considering that pretty much every other AL team is going out of its way to avoid signing true DHs, who is outbidding the Red Sox for Ortiz? Obviously, he’s unhappy about being on a one-year deal, but it’s not like there was more money out there for him.

Maybe the Rangers would spend big for Ortiz if they lose Hamilton, but that still seems like a long shot. Who else is going to ante up? Your Yankees?
