Cardinals turn to Matt Carpenter at second base, where he hasn’t played since age 13

Earlier this week I wondered if the Cardinals might use Allen Craig at second base once Lance Berkman returns from knee surgery, but Berkman isn’t even back yet and manager Mike Matheny is doing something even more surprising.

Matt Carpenter is starting at second base tonight despite the fact that he’s never played the position as a professional. In fact, Carpenter told FOX Sports Midwest that he can’t remember playing second base since he was 13 years old.

Carpenter’s bat is also definitely worth getting into the lineup and while most of his big-league action has come as a first baseman or corner outfielder he does have tons of minor-league experience at third base. Still, it’ll be very interesting to say the least.

Oooh boy would a Cards/Tigers WS be fun. The ball may never find leather!

If Craig ever plays second base again Matheny should be fired. Have to keep that man healthy no matter what. On a side note damn I hope the rumors are true and we pick up Grienke!

So, where does Craig play on an everyday basis if not at 1B or 2B? Seems like the outfield is set, unless he plays center for Jay, and I cannot see that happening with his questionable leg problems. I don’t think Matheny would replace either Holliday or Beltran at right or left. Freese is solid at 3B, Furcal is solid at SS. Do we bench Craig or play him at 2B???? Good problem to have with too many good players once Berkman is back.

Tommy Boy. I watched the W-S last year too. Freese is solid at third? Did you see the pop up which almost hit him on the head before he dropped it? I don’t think that is solid. The guy can hit, but can not field at all.

“The guy can hit, but can not field at all.”
Phil…please do yourself a favor and watch him in the field. I mean truly watch him.
Not highlites. Watch a few games.
If you are a true baseball guy…you know better than to base your opinion on one pop up. Was he replaced for defensive purposes late in games last year? Yep.
But the kid is developing himself into a fine defensive 3rd Baseman.

Second base is the blind catch from a SS or 3B feed with an incoming runner. Despite the humorous possibilities, it can also be very dangerous. Especially if base runners are emboldened knowing he’s got no experience there.

He can rotate in with Berkman and Beltran. Craig is also retuning from a broken knee cap he’s gonna need a few days down the road himself.

I hear what you are saying in regards to Craig’s leg/knee issues and the potential for injury (especially on those DP balls). He can rotate w/ Berkman & Beltran. He will also need some rest here and there during the 2nd half of the Season.
      But Matt Carpenter? Seriously?

    Dear Matheny,
Please find us an actual 2nd Basemen, and just make a rotation for 1B and LF (maybe stretching it to 3B) and keep some of our hitters healthy
