Um Fangraphs WAR adjusts for positional scarcity and their careers WARs are almost identical. I believe 49-44 in favor of Puckett. Playing first base costs Mattingly 12.5 runs per year in that equation.

I know WAR isn’t the be all/end all, but it’s definitely a good snapshot over a career. So yeah do me a favor and explain to me how Puckett is miles ahead of Mattingly.

Reggie’s right. The HOF should not induct rum-dums who hit below .252 for more than half of their career (and often WELL below that), who end up with a lame .262 average, who only occasionally made the Top Five in MVP voting and USUALLY didn’t come close to the Top Ten, who commonly led the league in strikeouts, and whose strikeouts usually exceeded his hit totals, who may have over 500 homers but, a la DAVE KINGMAN, that’s only because he played for so long, and he usually couldn’t muster 30 homers in a season. and ESPECIALLY those who have an indelible reputation as a very mediocre if not poor fielder, with a weak arm, a factor that tended to fully balance out his “impact” at the plate in most games……UNLESS, OF COURSE, the player browbeats the media until they finally relent….that they are the straw that stirs the drink. THEN I guess we have to let him in.

Think about this one. In a couple of weeks all the HOFers gather in Cooperstown for this years induction ceremonies.
I suspect a couple of the guys Jackson criticized may have some unpleasant words for Mr. October. Of course Jackson will say he was “misquoted” but we all know that’s is BS.

Reggie looks like a foolish old man here. Even if he thinks the things he said why say them publicly to a reporter?
