Jackson should be in the Hall of Fame as an Oakland A. I always assumed it was a savvy business decision on his part to associate himself more strongly with the Yankees, but he played just as many games with the Angels and twice as many with the A’s.

All that said, Jackson was a terrific player and I believe he has an airtight Hall of Fame case that is bolstered by Game 6 of the 1977 World Series.

I strongly recommend the book “The Bronx is Burning” and Graig Nettles’s memoirs for more about those Yankee teams.

I’ve never met Reggie Jackson so I can tell you nothing about his personality. All I can tell you is that he deserves to be in the Hall of Fame (even as a Yankee). The numbers/statistics he put up were quite incredible. It can be difficult to judge a player simply by his numbers. You have to assess them in the context in which he accumulated them. I didn’t like the Yankees then (still don’t), but Jackson made them great! There’s no disguising that.

I know the consensus is that Reggie is a douche. And he probably is, I don’t know. What I do know is that I met him in 1989 when he did a card signing. I was there before the signing because my step father was a window washer who was doing the windows of the business that was holding the signing. Him and I chatted with Reggie before the place opened up, and he was very cool, signed some stuff for me(that sadly I have since lost), talked a bit about baseball, and was an all around nice guy. One of my best baseball memories.

I know his reputation. I know what people say about him. I know that in the context I read this stuff he comes across terribly. But all I can say is I met him and he was a very nice man.

But that’s just my anecdote.

I am not sure that some player today that have taken the juice…won’t get in…
the feeling some ALREADY in were on the juice…..was it fair to out one or 2 of the players on that LIST…yet other remain hid…..time may change minds….what would you say…if or when the WHOLE list is shown..and some on the list are in the HOF……..then what…..it was NOT fair to out some and not others……

Reggie has always be an arrogant man. I met him several times when he has come up to Cooperstown during our Hall of Fame induction weekends. He comes out at the bars and restaurants and expects everyone to drop what they are doing and to cater to him and his entourage. Reggie never deserved the title of Mr. October and should have never gone in as a New York Yankee for the Hall of Fame. He got more than 300 home runs out of his 563 total home runs of his career with the A’s and Angels, I am sure he was probably offered money to go in as a yankee and it figures. he has always thought he was better than any other baseball player out there, and he in my opinion was one of the worst and most arrogant and stuck up players in the league, and If I see him in coopertsown again I wont walk up and shake his hand. He has some nerve to critisize when he sets a terrible example., So reggie maybe you should look in the mirror and reflect on how you think you are so good and others are bad. Your vote in my opinion for a Hall of Fame player shouldnt even be considered since you never write anyones name down anyway.

18thstreet……… Lets see you don’t say anything concerning Hank Aaron…yet Babe Ruth Struck out 1330 Aaron 1386 times…..Aaron adv only 36 Hr per 162 games a year where as Babe Ruth adv 46 HR per 162 games a years…..he was the 1st to hit 20, 30, 40, 50, 60 hr in a season…..he had NOBODY to show him how…and he was a pitcher the 1st 5 years,,,,and it has been said….if he remain a pitcher his whole career..he would have made the HOF as a pitcher……

Diluted? Hmmm, let’s see – Bert Blyleven is one of the more steady winners during his careers, he makes multiple All Star teams, and wins World Series rings nearly a decade apart, in 1979 with the Pirates (yes, Pittsburgh has had winning teams, kiddos!!) and 1987 with the Twins (Ooooo, those blinding Homerr Hakies in the MetroDome). If a spitballer like Gaylord Perry can be a HOF member, Bert EASILY should be, and deserves such. A lot of very good players…very good.. haven’t and will not be in the Hall. Does that downgrade their contributions? No. One comes to mind, 1B Steve Garvey (Dodgers, Padres), who holds the NL record for consecutive games played, a multiple All Star who was the game’s MVP in ’74 and ’78, and consistently led the Dodgers to the postseason, and the Padres to the 1984 NLCS and World Series.
As for the Twins’ Puckett, no question he belongs. His stats and All Star selections and post season performances in 1987 and 1991 lend credence for such.
I’ve never been a Reggie Jackson fan, BUT I agree with his comments questioning A-rod’s deserving HOF consideration. Consider this – Rafael Palmiero collected more than 3000 hits. Does he belong? No, due to PEDs, the same reason Alex’s candidacy is, and SHOULD be questioned.
Finally, isn’t it time to get off the “gambling” controversy about Pete Rose, acknowledge his acheivements in the game, grant HOF membership, and also make sure it is pointed out why he was banned. If you can have a racist like Ty Cobb and multiple boozers in the Hall, then the question of Rose’s character, with his character flaw being compulsive gambling, shouldn’t keep the all time Hits King out.

Good question. I love them both, and whether they’re in or out makes no difference to me.

Jack Marshall’s answer surprised me though. It made sense applied to Rice and Evans, but I’ve always thought it was a Hall of Stats rather than a Hall of Fame; the proof being that Roger Maris isn’t in it.

I saw Puckett play. He was the best baseball player that I have ever seen. In fact, he’s the reason why I became a baseball fan. He definitely had the “it” factor (or X-factor, as you call it). He could do it all. It’s too bad that he wasn’t able to have a full career.

people like to say the game is great because it doesn’t need to change much over time to be great, which is why it is a game of Stats, but the I think the game is so different even today than it was just 20 years ago, It’s better to compare players to their contemporaries than to the past or future. Who were the best 5 or 10 players of a decade ore era. I’d have a hall of fame at about 200 players total.
