While I understand that cash is king, I think that people may be forgetting one important thing, Cole Hamel’s grew up a die hard Padres fan. The Padres and Dodgers have a long standing rivalry. While the Padres haven’t been good in a long time it is still a very heated rivalry. Hamel’s going to the Dodgers would be like a slap in the face to his home team and like sleeping with the enemy. Time passes and cash is king but keep this in mind when using a loose term about a So Cal kid returning home because while it’s only a 2 hour drive, all those things mentioned above are relevant.

Really guys lets look at this. First of all 2013 tv contract will come into play they will reap millions, second alot of old money off books, place sold out every night and they have to keep hamels to keep fan base happy. This is not the phillies of old who wade said were a small market team.

Sounds alot like the same chatter I heard before with Howard no way they are going to resign him.
Money is there its up to Ruben to figure out how to spend it

This year any team who has the injuries they had are going to struggle it happens, so enjoy now and fightins will be around sooner then later.

Be ready to then despise everyone in the front office, although that wouldn’t be right. See, a couple years back (I think it was 07′) Hamels went to arbitration with the Phillies and when all was said and done spoke out afterwards saying that he felt like it was a low blow from the organization. To the people making the calls back then, yes, they deserve to be despised for not giving him what he deserved, or at least working with him on a deal rather than letting it get to the point or arbitration. Now you have a fairly good front office that CAN”T sign him to an extension because he wants to go out and test free agency. My guess would be that he’d be more inclined to make a deal with the Phillies had they shown him more respect back then. If they could’ve singed him to an new deal, they would’ve already. fact is they can’t and therefore won’t, so you might as well say goodbye to him now cause he’s as good as gone once the season’s over if he’s not traded by then. As a Phillies fan it sucks, but don’t blame RAJ for the mistakes of those before him.

Schilling? Please…..he had become a major malcontent by that point – ship him off.

And don’t forget, they also got Omar Daal, Nelson Figueroa and Vicente Padilla in that trade -the latter made the 2002 All Star team. Plus freed up cash to sign Thome 2 years later, which effectively started the process of turning the club around.

And just think, when Schilling goes to jail, that trade means they won’t refer to him as “Former Phillie Curt Schilling”.

They’re a rebuilding team???

You need to “face reality” that a team with the 2nd highest payroll won’t need 5 or 6 years to rebuild, or for that matter go into any rebuilding phase at all. Just because they have 1 bad year doesn’t mean they’ll be bad for several years, much to your disappointment.

js20011041: your argument for trading Hamels seems like more of an argument to trade Lee / Halladay. You can rebuild in less than 5 years. It makes sense to trade the guys who are older now and keep Hamels to continue to be the staff ace. Even if you need to salary dump Lee or Halladay so that you free up money for Cole and then take a run at a free agent in the off season.

It is probably because proper pronunciation of Hamels is “HAY-muls”, “Ham-muls” is spelled with 2 Ms.

Hamilton OR Hammels will cost more than those 3 guys combined. Some guys will be getting raises for next year. If they sign Hamels, they’ll need to replace their CF, a pitcher, and their 3B and will already have a payroll similar to this years.

If Hamels gets traded and becomes a FA, say Dodgers and Phillies, he’s not going to have a grudge against the Phils and choose the Dodgers. He will choose whom ever gives him the extra year.

If Hammels is most concerned with winning, I’m not sure he would re-sign with Philly. They are an old and expensive team, without any young offensive talent close to the majors. Does Philly have the cash to sign offensive FAs and the roster spots for them? Are such FAs even going to be available in the next year or 2?

If Hammels means “who ever offers the most money” when he says “anybody who wants to win”, he could re-sign with Philly…but if his goal is to balance $$ with winning…he should have more attractive options.

Signing him doesn’t make sense. Why give him $100 plus million to pitch for a rebuilding team. By the time the Phillies are competing again, he’ll be at least 33 or 34. Trade him before the deadline and turn him into some key pieces to the next Phillies contender. I know rebuilding sucks, but the Phillies need to face reality. Just putting off the inevitable will only lead to a much longer period of suffering.

According to Leslie Gudel cole has already said even if he should get traded, which he understands is a business decision he would still give the phillies the first shot at signing him in free agency. Sounds like he wants to stay here folks.

If the phillies fail to sign him long term I will officially despise everyone in the front office. Right now hes the youngest, best player we have. Not signing him would make 0 sense.
