I too used to respect and admire Gammons. No more. This little side bar is another item that’s proof positive that Gammons, for whatever reason(s), has slipped into that same primordial ooze that afflicts most other members of the media. And I do not mean the Sports Media alone. They are all dripping in it.
I don’t know which is worse, writing nonsensical puff pieces about undeserving players or creating a controversy where none exists, also about undeserving players. Would that there be another genre of stories from which to choose when there is a quiet day. However, with the edict from media management and ownership, that’s not bloody likely. Sigh.

Despite the fact that I despise ESPN, let me be the first Sox fan to say that Lester can beat it. He can take Buchholz and Beckett with them. They can go play for the Marlins or Astros or any team whose fans don’t really give a hoot. Then they can go on the DL and golf everyday all summer or go big buck huntin’ or whatever. Heck, they can go drink beer and eat fried chicken in the stands with the fans who don’t care.

I appreciated Beckett in 2007 but ever since he has looked unmotivated (waistline grows by an inch every year) and he’s certainly unrepentent. I hated it when Epstein signed him to an extension mid-season last year (despite the team’s stated policy of not negotiating during the season) and now I wonder if Epstein did it to sabotage the team because not only does Beckett not care, he sucks. It was acceptable when Beckett was in his old pattern of one good year followed by a bad year followed by a good year….but Beckett in his the midst of his third consecutive bad year. He’s not an ace.

Lester was promising at one point but he’s settled in to being a decent number two/good number three in a rotation adn Buchholz has pissed away all of his talent.

What happened? He works for ESPN is what happened. ESPN is the MSNBC/Fox News of sports: they don’t ever let the truth or research get in the way of a good story. I swear to God, if the people at ESPN sit in a morning meeting and somebody observes that “so and so looked really unhappy last night when somebody asked him something” the producers say “make something out of that–run with it”.

Gammons is the same guy who called Alfonso Soriano “Amaury Soriano” for like 3 columns in a row back in 2000 before someone (me) finally called him out on it and he ceased doing it.

Could not have said it better. While the media can say what it wants, it so often creates an atmosphere of discontent and anger when the players get wind of it. Wasn’t it Chipper Jones or somebody who said one of the rules of baseball is “don’t look at the newspaper”? Intentional or no, Gammons isn’t helping. And neither are most of the Boston media.

Slow news day for Pete. If Lester does actually want to leave Boston, I can think of about 29 other teams that would be happy to give him a spot.

When Boston gets the outfield, Bucholz and Pedroia back the atmosphere could change real quick.

Maybe the Red Sox’ front office itself is trying to get a read on Lester’s mood. It wouldn’t be the first time they employed PG as an instrument to reach out to a player. Last year, when Lackey was struggling so badly, Gammons was the one who quietly made it known his wife had cancer. This was almost certainly done at the Red Sox’ instance. It had the effect of creating empathy for Lackey, and enabling him to not have to make excuses.

My guess is that Gammons doesn’t want Lester on the Red Sox anymore therefore tries to get something started. I feel bad for Lester for now he’ll be bothered by mindless questions regarding this from the jackals (media) any time the team gets a bad loss while he is on the mound or some off the field episode happens.
