Ozzie Guillen has it out with Bryce Harper over pine tar

Since Pine Tar Incident is already taken, I’m not quite sure what to call this one. The Pine Tar Episode? The Pine Tar Happening?

Miami manager Ozzie Guillen sent multiple F-bombs Bryce Harper‘s way during the fourth inning of Sunday’s Nationals-Marlins game. Nationals manager Davey Johnson said afterwards that Guillen was calling out Harper for having too much pine tar on his bat and trying to intimidate the 19-year-old.

“It got on the umpire’s nerves and it got on my nerves,” Johnson said of Guillen’s profanity. “He was trying to intimidate my player.”

Guillen called Harper “unprofessional” after the game, adding: “I was just telling him how cute he was,” according to Adam Kilgore of the Washington Post.

Harper refused to take the bait, saying simply that Guillen was a “great manager,” CSNWashington’s Mark Zuckerman reports.

The Nats Enquirer has a nice rundown of the proceedings, along with screenshots.

Why anyone likes Guillen is beyond me.

    • baseballisboring - Jul 15, 2012 at 5:45 PM

I dunno, man. I’m endlessly entertained by his honesty and lack of filter. Would I necessarily wanna play for the guy? Ehhhh…..

      • Old Gator - Jul 16, 2012 at 5:53 AM

You want lack of filter, go to Mexico and drink the tap water. The effect will be a lot like Slobbering Ozzie’s mouth.

    • sabatimus - Jul 15, 2012 at 6:13 PM

And if he’s trying to get under Harper’s skin, good luck with that. If Guillen had asked Harper that beer question, it would have been a DOUBLE clown question.

    • RedHeadedBastard - Jul 15, 2012 at 6:52 PM

      Ozzie is fake tough.

    • kkolchak - Jul 16, 2012 at 7:59 AM

Ozzie has refreshing candor in a league in which too many guys have taken Crash Davis’s rules about spouting cliches in interviews to heart. That said, there is a fine line between being and entertaining eccentric and being boorish lout who is hurting your team, and Ozzie has been crossing that line far too often as of late.

  2. eaglesfan723 - Jul 15, 2012 at 5:33 PM

I did hear that Harper likes his bats nice and sticky.

Ozzy Guillen: the only manager that makes me happy the Sox have Bobby Valentine

    • baseballisboring - Jul 15, 2012 at 5:47 PM

I think Ozzie is a better tactical manager than Bobby V. But I can’t even IMAGINE Ozzie being in Boston, New York, Philadelphia…

      • keithbangedyermom - Jul 15, 2012 at 6:05 PM

LOL. Ozzie might have a ring, but he’s not in BV’s league managing a game. Contrary to what is posted here and what the sheep believe, Valentine, while arrogant as hell, is actually a good manager.

      • dcfan4life - Jul 15, 2012 at 6:40 PM

A good manager doesnt alienate his players wherever he goes. Bobby Valentine always does that. So your statement should read Bobby know how to manage, but is NOT a good manager by any means.

      • bobulated - Jul 15, 2012 at 6:48 PM

No one comes in second like Bobby V.

      • natslady - Jul 15, 2012 at 7:44 PM

Ozzie’s team is not well-coached and three players fell asleep so Harper could steal third on Friday.

Ozzie forgot to read the scouting report and intentionally walked the rookie backup catcher to load the bases for a .385 hitter–who promptly singled for 2 RBI in a game that had no score and in which his pitcher (Nolasco) was mowing ’em down. Later two fielders let an entirely catchable pop fly fall between them, total lack of energy… I could go on.

      • yahmule - Jul 15, 2012 at 11:41 PM

So true, natslady. Harper showed up Ozzie’s team the other day, so he was clearly nursing a grudge against the kid. The extra attention from the exchange was just an added bonus for him.

  4. vincentbojackson - Jul 15, 2012 at 5:39 PM

Ozzy Guillen probably thinks Fidel Castro can use as much pine tar as he wants.

  5. dugldo - Jul 15, 2012 at 5:41 PM

Ozzie is the BIGGEST DOUCHE in sports. Baseball, football any of them. Go away you make baseball look bad!

  6. sgoodmantzak - Jul 15, 2012 at 5:42 PM

That’s a clown quantity of pine tar bro

    • Old Gator - Jul 15, 2012 at 7:56 PM

That’s a clown in the opposing dugout, bro.

  7. skerney - Jul 15, 2012 at 5:43 PM

Ozzie should worry about saving his team and job, not about how much pine tar Bryce Harper has on his bat.

  8. dannythebisforbeast - Jul 15, 2012 at 5:50 PM

Harper didn’t respond cuz he didn’t understand a word guillen said

  9. qcubed3 - Jul 15, 2012 at 5:54 PM

How can Ozzie call Harper “unprofessional” while at the same time pulling some Busch league nonsense?

  10. paperlions - Jul 15, 2012 at 5:54 PM

    Ozzie called someone unprofessional?

If we were making a list of the least unprofessional people in baseball, wouldn’t Ozzie hands down be #1?

    • paperlions - Jul 15, 2012 at 6:04 PM

oops, should have been least professional or most unprofessional….sorry, I’m not an unprofessional commenter.

  11. bostmm - Jul 15, 2012 at 5:56 PM

I may not be one of the ones who thinks Harper is the next coming of Babe Ruth but he has done a lot to help create POSITIVE attention this year to the Nats + MLB. . . . .Ozzy Guillen on the other hand . . . I wish the Commissioner had the power to suspend him for 10 games just for being a jackass !

  12. hittfamily - Jul 15, 2012 at 6:00 PM

Davey Johnson is a really shitty manager. Can you imagine Lou Pinella, Mike Scoscia, Joe Girardi, Joe Maddon….. allowing another manager to yell at their 19 year old rookie without leaving the dugout?

They would all have tried to fight Guillen right then and there.

    • sabatimus - Jul 15, 2012 at 6:18 PM

Are you intimating that Joe Girardi is a good manager?

      • hittfamily - Jul 15, 2012 at 6:29 PM

Yeah. He was good with the Marlins, he’s good in New York. This isn’t a special Yankees team, and yet they have the best record in baseball, in the toughest division in baseball. They might win by 15 games in a division that won’t have a team under .500.

For the life of me, I can’t figure out how this team is so good. They have a good 1 and 2, then 3 replacement level starting pitchers. Their catcher is replacement level, their third baseman is average, their firstbaseman is decent. Their closer is done for the year.

        And yet…

      • churchoftheperpetuallyoutraged - Jul 15, 2012 at 7:05 PM

For the life of me, I can’t figure out how this team is so good.

The pitching staff is being helped by lots of K’s and low level of walks, and if the HR rate stabilizes they could be a lot better (4th in MLB in xFIP). They continue to get lucky with scrap heap relief projects although Wade has lost a ton of luster this year.

As for the offense, they are significantly helped by the HR. While the RISP failures have been well documented, someone on RAB brought up a great point. Every time someone steps into the batter’s box, especially at home, someone is in scoring position.

Girardi has done a great job managing his staff and bullpen, and while they’ve faced some pitcher injuries, the position players are staying healthy thanks to the rotating DH.

Glad a non-Yankee fan can see the good job Girardi is doing and doesn’t just resort to “lawl payroll of course they are good” like most others do.

    Oz is a Sooper dick….

  14. keithbangedyermom - Jul 15, 2012 at 6:02 PM

GOOD. Someone needs to tell Guillen off. He’s the most overrated manager in baseball and is an unabashed idiot.

  15. larryboodry - Jul 15, 2012 at 6:05 PM

I’d rather have Bryce Harper playing for my team than Ozzie Guillen managing it.

  16. noozehound - Jul 15, 2012 at 6:09 PM

I love ozzy. I wish more managers were like him. all the “professional pc” bull$h!t makes every interview boring as hell. Ozzy is entertaining!

    • voteforno6 - Jul 15, 2012 at 7:38 PM

I think that’s why the media loves him. He gives good copy. Beyond that, I’m not sure how good of a manager he is.

  17. dowhatifeellike - Jul 15, 2012 at 6:22 PM

I find Ozzie highly entertaining outside of the dugout. When it comes to being a manager though, he’s a joke. I don’t think he realizes this isn’t the ’60s.

  18. jkaflagg - Jul 15, 2012 at 6:28 PM

Clown manager, bro……but it will make for good footage for the Showtime series….

  19. crillbill - Jul 15, 2012 at 6:39 PM

    Fidel Castro is smiling

    • Old Gator - Jul 15, 2012 at 7:58 PM

      Fidel is embarrassed.

      • royalsfaninfargo - Jul 15, 2012 at 8:33 PM

I think Billy Martin would be embarrassed by this one Gator.

  20. mvpolamalu - Jul 15, 2012 at 6:39 PM

I agree that Harper has done some stupid things in the past (as most 19 year olds have) but recently he has been very profesional. His comments about Chipper before the all star game were very classy

  21. gostros19 - Jul 15, 2012 at 6:40 PM

I bet George Brett wouldnt care too much.

  22. dcfan4life - Jul 15, 2012 at 6:47 PM

I watched this game, and Bryce set off Ozzie in the greatest way. Ozzie was trying to rile another player and fire his club up at the same time. He had been barking about his pine tar before, like it mattered…Bryce isnt killing the Marlins, the Nats pitching has. So Bryce, before he stepped to the plate, held the bat out like he always does in front of the plate. But this time he stared at Ozzie while he did it. And no one hates to be shown up more than this idiot Ozzie Guillen. So he goes off, nearly gets tossed, and looks like an ass. And Bryce, playing it all professional, looks the victor. And you people think Harper hasn’t shown immense maturity in the big leagues. Ozzie is a big mouth nut who cant stand losing and being shown up. And he just got embarassed by a 19 year old kid who went 0-4 in the game…

  23. andrewproughcfe - Jul 15, 2012 at 6:55 PM

Ozzie is Kenny Powers. I heard the Charros need a new 3rd base coach…

  24. sabathiawouldbegoodattheeighthtoo - Jul 15, 2012 at 6:57 PM

There are rules about pine tar. If Ozzie thinks Harper is breaking the rules, he should talk to the umpire. If he does not think Harper is breaking the rules, he should STFU or he is just being a [insert profanity here].

  25. onbucky96 - Jul 15, 2012 at 7:31 PM

    Ozzie needs more ambien.
