But they aren’t paying him for what he is already done. They are paying him for what he will do. The yankees will be very lucky to get 1 home run per million dollars at this point.

The idea was that for all MLB has done to limit draft day paychecks, there is 1 aging average third baseman that will make all of the draft picks money combined.

But that’s exactly it. In order to save less than they pay veteran backup infielders, they’ve made it considerably more difficult for small market teams to build through the draft. The shortsightedness and cheapness is mind boggling.

So it comes out to about $1million per team less, not significant dollar wise but significantly spread out among the draft as a whole plus moving up the signing deadline makes a big difference.
